Vivoactive 4 series & Venu SW 7.10 causing multiple user issues (meta thread)

vivoactive 4 Series

Just wanted to create this meta-thread to highlight (to Garmin admins and developer/customer support) that there now seem to be multiple forum threads where users are highlighting major usability issues since update 7.10 for Venu and Vivoactive 4 series. For example, these are the threads that I can see (judging by title):

Thanks in advance for any work-around/bugfix that Garmin can rollout (urgently). I've tried downgrading a Vivoactive 4S to 7.01 BETA (using the normal file-transfer method), but the watch does not auto-update and just removes the file.

  • I've got the same alert. What does it mean?

  • Yep, me too. My brand new watch, that was lasting 3-5 days prior to the update, is now lasting less than 1 day!

  • My new vivoactive 4s has not been working properly since the ver 7.10 update last week. That first night after the update, the watch was acting up (flashlight turned on unexpectedly while I was asleep in bed & woke me up). So, I got up and plugged the watch in, thinking the battery was dead from using it for several days. The next morning, as I was doing my walk, it appeared to be working just fine, but about 12 mins into the walk, it just froze. The entire watch face completely froze & all data recording stopped. I could not power it off or do anything. I finished my walk & when I got back, I plugged it in, which seemed to wake it up ... but only for a little while, then it froze again. This continued all day ... about every 5-10 mins, the watch would freeze. I left it alone for the next day, plugged in, then tried again on Sunday afternoon. This time, it seemed to be working, but it wouldn't sync to Garmin Connect. After doing some bluetooth on/off & phone disconnections/reconnections, it finally synced.  Same thing happened on Monday.

Then, I received a notification that a Connect IQ "Download to Device Failed. Not enough storage space available." Being a new Garmin owner (this is my first watch & I've only had it for a few weeks), it took me days/hours to find any help (and this forum), Garmin definitely does not make it easy to find this forum!  Anyways, the only thing I could find that I could delete was a Deezer app, so I deleted that since I don't use it. That seemed to solve the problem, and all worked well on Tuesday. But then today, the watch quit working again about mid day. Didn't record any vitals/activities from about 1:30PM until I noticed it a few hours later, when I went thru the steps again to get it working at around 8PM. I noticed that I had received another notification about Connect IQ failing to download due to no storage; but at this point, I can't find anything that I can delete. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

I do see that ver 7.10 has been pulled due to many issues; but they say to just do the work arounds while they work on a solution! Well, the workarounds don't always work. And when they take sometimes hours to accomplish, it makes continuing to use the watch pointless. My son & husband have never had these kinds of issues with their Garmins in the past. Wish I could just revert to the prior software version - at least that worked for me.  I feel like returning my watch & getting my money back.  Very disappointed in Garmin.

  • Wish I could just revert to the prior software version

You can manually downgrade the firmware, read my response here.

The watch firmware won't be automatically updated back to 7.10 thanks to the fact it has been pulled back.

  • Anyone have problems with incoming calls notification? I thought that the problem was with connect app but after downgrade to version 4.57 the problem still occurs, IT helped for while

  • Are you sure you have auto update of the GCM app disabled...? Is it still 4.57?

  • I have gone back to using a preset watch face from the watch instead of one of my installed watch faces and it seems to have stopped the error.  All my stats are now loading as normal, the blank screen isn't happening.  Hoping it lasts!

  • Vivoactive 4S owner here, running v7.10. Just wanted to add another voice to the chorus of disapproval and disappointment. My custom watch faces from IQ keep going black. Sometimes I get the "IQ yellow warning triangle" instead of a black screen. A restart resolves it temporarily, but it gets tedious having to restart a couple of times each day. The default faces work fine, and other functions seem ok.

  • Probably due to the 7.10 firmware auto-update, that has now been pulled (https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/healthandwellness/f/vivoactive-4-series/304608/pulled-vivoactive-4-4s-software-update---7-10) I have been having issues with my vivoactive 4s. Massive battery drainage at first, then I realized I had no Wrist HR. I don't know if Garmin's auto-update rolled my watch back to 6.90 but I am on it right now. But.. my watch also shows Sensor version 0.00, WHR version 0.00.00, BMX 0.0.0(!).

It seems that I am missing some sensor firmware. When I connect to Garmin Express it indeed shows that there is an update available: "vivoctive 4 small Sensor Hub version 18.02" (the one corresponding to 6.90 firmware) it transfers it to the watch (the file gup3356.gcd is being created in the Garmin\RemoteSW folder on the watch), after unplugging from PC I get a notification on the watch that there is an update available, I agree to install it, the watch reboots and seems to be installing the update, I even get the notification that "there was new firmware installed for the sensor", but when I go to firmware information on my watch it still shows 0.00/0.00.00/0.0.0(1).

Every time I plug the device to my PC and then unplug it I get the same message, again and again, that there is new update, but no matter how many times I agree to install it, it doesn't actually install.

Some time ago, someone posted a procedure for same situation occurring on vivoactive 3, with a file that was supposedly forcing the update:

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/healthandwellness/f/vivoactive-3-3-music/280278/sensor-hub-6-64-fix-information

Do any of you now how to achieve this with vivoactie 4s?

I have already tried reverting to fresh 6.90 install from the beta 7.01 zip download but it doesn't work. Nor do the hard/soft resets. I am on the newest Garmin Express by the way.

  • Garmin support tell me it is a software issue with 7.10 and they are trying to work on a fix - no timeline given.  Anyone know how to revert to old version software?
