Vivoactive 4 series & Venu SW 7.10 causing multiple user issues (meta thread)

vivoactive 4 Series

Just wanted to create this meta-thread to highlight (to Garmin admins and developer/customer support) that there now seem to be multiple forum threads where users are highlighting major usability issues since update 7.10 for Venu and Vivoactive 4 series. For example, these are the threads that I can see (judging by title):

Thanks in advance for any work-around/bugfix that Garmin can rollout (urgently). I've tried downgrading a Vivoactive 4S to 7.01 BETA (using the normal file-transfer method), but the watch does not auto-update and just removes the file.

  • GPS shows as ready when selecting run and starts ok.  During run i can see total time and pace but distance remains at 0.00m for entire run.  When i try to save the activity it says failed to save and i lose everything.  Just started happening out of the blue.  I have reset watch and synced it but still the same.

  • There seems to be issues with the new 7.10-software. Expect a new software update from Garmin shortly.

  • and it hasn't auto-updated in the last 24-48 hours

Probably because update 7.10 has been pulled back.

I filled up the watch-memory with some dummy-data.

Didn't help in my case, see Arrow right Any workaround to disable automatic firmware updates?

  • Amazing how new updates mess up previously working features.

  • We installed 7.1 on a VA4 and a VA4S. The VA4 has been working flawlessly (it's running a ConnectIQ watch face). The VA4S is running the same watch face as the VA4, however on the VA4S the watch face goes black several times a day and becomes completely unresponsive to any touch or button presses (except the on/off 20 second reboot button press). I can't say this is a contributing factor for certain, but it seems to do this shortly after receiving either a text or email notification from an iPhone. Hopefully, this tidbit of info will contribute in tracking down the issue(s). Holding down the on/off button for 20 seconds to soft reboot the watch successfully restarts it and the ConnectIQ watch face reappears as if nothing bad had ever happened. Extremely frustrating.

  • For those trying to downgrade a 4S, there is a specific download for the 4S version of the "update". Follow the instructions to install the file called GUPDATE_690.GCD on to the device and rename it to GUPDATE.GCD.

Another caveat, if you have Mac computers, you will need to use a program called Android File Transfer or some other program that supports MTP to get the file onto the device.

  • On top of many other issues my watch reported that the wallet has been disabled... at the supermarket checkout without any backup Rage @Garmin, get your *** together!

  • Garmin "pulled" 7.10, OK

Why have they not restored 6.90 to our devices?

Are we all Beta testing 7.10 now in hopes they can fix it?

  • I am guessing most watches are working fine with 7.10. No need to downgrade for most of us.

  • Why have they not restored 6.90 to our devices?

They can't. The watch itself won't allow to install older firmware, although technically garmin could prepare old firmware with updated version number, but that would make things really confusing.
