Fenix 6 pro green light sensor and heart rate not working consistently

I have read all of the threads for when the green light and/or heart rate from the watch is not functioning... trying everything suggested:

  • Restart the watch
  • Clean the back
  • Tighten the strap
  • Make sure software is up-to-date

I have done all of these!!

Occasionally when I restart the watch (several times in a row!) I can get the heart rate readings back, not always with the green light though (more often it does not turn on? Not sure if this is problematic).
It then might last a few hours, before dropping out again.

It also seems that even when the heart rate monitor is "functioning" the stress and body battery readings are completely thrown off.

I have invested a lot in garmin over the years, but I am very disappointed with this current lack of performance.

Please help, before I am forced to start exploring the world beyond Garmin!

  • Today the fc lights would turn on when the watch was turned face down. I would turn it face up again and the lights would turn off, all while the sensor was in contact with my wrist. It was as if the watch had a gyroscope and it could detect when it was face down and everything worked correctly, and face up everything would turn off and it would do nothing.

  • Good afternoon. Last night the FC worked perfectly and this morning after breakfast. The FC stopped working and until now. Neither restarting nor resetting. Nothing. On Monday I will try to disassemble the flex again. But I think I will have to disconnect the FC since it is completely screwed up.

  • Hi, I  did a bike tour ( activity) this afternoon and after 20min the HR sensor stopped for about 20 minutes and then came back on. This way the watch is not usable because the HR sensor is the most important part of the watch. If it fails or stops the whole activity is useless. Not to say that this really upset me. But I am even more pissed off by the fact that there is no reaction from Garmin support, No suggestions, no ideas etc. This seems not to be a single case and I am sure Garmin knows this but instead of supporting us they keep quiet.

Sorry but this really upset me.

I also noticed that if the HR sensors are off and I activate  the puls-oxygen sensor permanently then the HR sensor also "wakes" up ( at leasr for a while). This seems to trigger the HR sensor to do a measurement.

Maybe a simple patch that increases the sensitivity ( or trigger) of the HR sensor on the wrist  might fix the problem (?)

  • Good morning. My Garmin has not emitted a heart rate light for a day and it does not detect my heart rate. Neither restarting nor cleaning the sensor, nothing makes it emit light or heart rate again. The only hope is that it is not hardware and with a patch it can be fixed. I see it doubtful. They are already concentrating on the Garmin 8 and this one is falling behind...

  • Hm, frustrating. Personally I think I am on the way out. The F6xpro is and was a great watch for me the last 5-6 yrs or so.

Many hundreds of hours of training, racing, touring. For now it's getting old ... one button isn't working fully anymore, the battery gets weaker and now this WHR issue ... plus the lacking support right now.

This doesn't feel like I might buy another Garmin as my next watch. The prices rised quite substantially, the competitors improved their products and, and this might be a very important part in my decision process:

over the years I learned which features I need and which features I don't need

For example I don't need WHR (in activities). But I like the body battery and miss it right now with the non-working sensor(s).

I don't use the music storage on my watch, keeping podcasts up to date etc always was a hassle, so I stopped trying to use that (in detail: I want podcasts from gpodder etc, not from Spotify etc. Yes, I tested the apps ...)

barometric sensor: yes, please. offline maps: sure, need that.

So I look around and there are products from other companies that seem to fit ... and are less expensive.

Sure, these products will have flaws, too. I use GPS watches for decades and have experienced it X times: marketing sounds great, in practice things are different.

tldr; Garmin doesn't want me to stay, by not even reacting to this issue. They could say: watches are old now, support is over, the hardware dies, sorry. But they choose not to. OK, so in turn I don't feel the need to stay with Garmin, either. And I know they don't care.

  • I totally agree with your words. I have a Garmin 6x pro and edge 530. But I don't think the next devices will be Garmin. I'll probably replace them with Coros. There isn't a single Garmin moderator on this forum to help a little. It's quite frustrating. And I keep saying that this is a factory fault that Garmin should take care of. It can't be that the heart rate gets damaged from use... I understand the battery degradation, I understand that the buttons break, I understand that it gets damaged from a blow. But what if the heart rate gets damaged without doing anything??? I don't want a new watch. I want my watch working properly or repair solutions. I have sent 5 emails to Garmin support in the last 2 weeks and to date no response... indignant is an understatement. And I am a person who uses it a lot, especially to control post-workouts. Recoveries.

  • Good evening. Update. After being more than 24 hours without the FC working. The lights being off at all times. Tonight I decided to open the Garmin again, disassembling everything, including the watch battery. I have been checking the flex cables, looking at the connections and any defects in the connections, since I am not going to mess with the motherboard. I clean the connections with isopropyl alcohol. I reconnect everything. With little hope, since I thought that the FC hardware had broken completely. To my surprise, I turn on the watch and the FC lights, working perfectly like the first day. So I no longer know what to think about where the fault comes from. If it continues working perfectly, it is clear that it was due to a bad connection. If it breaks again in 2 or 3 days, it is a software fault. There is something that leaves the FC dead when the watch has been running for a while. And the only way for it to work again is to disconnect the flex cable that comes from the battery and the FC from the motherboard. I will keep you updated as anything new happens.

  • If it breaks again in 2 or 3 days, it is a software fault

    Or rather bad connection too.

  • Exacto.

  • Good afternoon. Good news, it continues to work perfectly after going out on a MTB on very bumpy trails and roads. I took it apart again and looked to see if the battery was putting pressure on the flex of the fc and I think that could be the problem. I took everything apart again. I put everything back together but without tightening the battery to the fc sensor and its flex too much and the screws on the motherboard are tightened very lightly, just enough so that it doesn't move but without crushing the battery against the fc sensor. Possible problem. Over time the lipo battery can swell due to use. Very little. But just enough so that when pressed by the motherboard. This presses the flex or the fc sensor and makes it not work well. It is one of the possibilities that I am looking at. Since yesterday it has been working perfectly. Not a single fault. Not with bumps or movements.
