Fenix 6 pro green light sensor and heart rate not working consistently

I have read all of the threads for when the green light and/or heart rate from the watch is not functioning... trying everything suggested:

  • Restart the watch
  • Clean the back
  • Tighten the strap
  • Make sure software is up-to-date

I have done all of these!!

Occasionally when I restart the watch (several times in a row!) I can get the heart rate readings back, not always with the green light though (more often it does not turn on? Not sure if this is problematic).
It then might last a few hours, before dropping out again.

It also seems that even when the heart rate monitor is "functioning" the stress and body battery readings are completely thrown off.

I have invested a lot in garmin over the years, but I am very disappointed with this current lack of performance.

Please help, before I am forced to start exploring the world beyond Garmin!

  • I also reinstalled GC on the phone (android) and synced via Garmin Express on the PC.

No external sensors in the settings on the watch, but in GE and GC. I'd like to get rid of them, they aren't labelled correctly anway (I don't have any Pod ...). Don't know how to completely remove and re-add them. (I can remove the f6xpro, but not the individual sensors)

Basically I am back at the start, no settings, no anything ...

  • An additional update: since today the watch seems to experience some sort of out of memory and/or freeze issues. It crashed after one of the required restarts (to get WHRS back on) and also when trying to start a running exercise. Which resulted in a watch-induced restart. This never happened in 5.5 years with multiple recorded activities / week. Seems like most sensors go dead now, even without requiring to record an activity before.

I checked the app logs on the watch, but those do not present any visible issue to me (not familiar with the format).

  • Update one week later: after resetting the watch 6 days ago, things are almost back to normal. The only loss of sensor functionality (steps and load) occurred 2d after reset one or two minutes into a jump rope activity (monitored by the official Garmin Jump Rope app from Connect IQ). All other activities, including additional jump rope ones have been without any issue and no further sensor disabling or restarting the watch was required.

Good news at least in my case are:

    • It is most likely not a hardware issue
    • Factory resetting the watch helped while all settings could be restored via the backup
    • No software update was needed (and also not issued, watch is still on v27.0)
  • I removed an external HR sensor chest band from the list of sensors on my watch. Now light sensor works again.

  • I wanted to add my experience. I turned off updates a while ago so I am on 23.10. A few months ago the WHR started to turn off for no reason and the body battery would stall.

So I am not running anything recent firmware wise with the same issue. Reading the recent posts I see some have the polar H10 which I have as well and use for running.

When I see the issue arise again I will turn off the e thermal connectivity to see if that helps.

Usually to get this working again i do a power off a few times and the lights start up again..

Hopefully knowing I don’t have the 26 or 27 series firmware this will help with troubleshooting

  • just crazy that Garmin is not responding to the BMX, WHR and Sensor hub being 0 and not working. My watch turned to absolutely useless (other than the time bit) over night. I am so disappointed in Garmin. My Fenix 6 is in absolutely new-like condition!

If they did not answer your email (assuming you already sent them one), then call them for a faster reply. If neither the checking for updates in Garmin Express, nor the master reset to factory defaults helped, then typically the device needs to be exchanged, and for that you have to speak directly to the Product Support through their website at https://support.garmin.com

  • Another owner linked to failure of the heart rate sensor. The lights turn off when they want. The device continues to register, but no green lights are seen. This has been happening for 2 weeks now. It can only be solved by tapping the clock a few times and the lights start to work. Turning them off when they want. I wrote Garmin 4 emails and no response. What a coincidence that so many watches in 2 months begin to fail in the same way. What solutions does Garmin give in an 800 euro watch??? ZERO solutions. And it is clear that it is a factory software or hardware failure. Even if the warranty passes, they should give the owners solutions that do not involve paying more for another watch. If they do that, they will lose a client and I will dedicate myself to publishing everything on social networks. It is not normal that without getting it wet or having a blow, so many things break down suddenly.

    Call them.

What a coincidence that so many watches in 2 months begin to fail in the same way. What solutions does Garmin give in an 800 euro watch???

Garmin sells tens of millions of watches each year, so the probability of having two watches with the same problem in a two months window is certainly not so small.

    ZERO solutions.

The problem how you described it (starts working after tapping on the watch), sounds very much like a hardware problem (dislodged connector, cold junction,...). In that case the only solution is the exchange of the watch (or a repair, but Garmin only exchanges watches).

  • The problem I see is this. You spend 800 euros on a watch and in 3 years, overnight, a function that is very, very necessary for recovery stops working. I take very good care of the watch, no sea, no pool, I even take it off to shower. It is used for MTB together with a Garmin Edge 530. And without giving it any knocks or anything, the HR stops working??? Well, I don't think it is normal that these units that I think are defective are not replaced or repaired by Garmin at no cost. Before, I had a Forerunner 935 and it developed some cracks in the HR sensor. After 4 years, they replaced the unit with a new or reconditioned one. My experience on that occasion was fabulous, since it was clearly a manufacturing fault. How do I think this is? As I said, it won't cost me 800 euros to change the watch every 3-4 years. I will call them today to see what they tell me. If not, then I'll do what a colleague here did. Open it and reconnect all the flexes I have. If I have to resort to that. Never again Garmin. Neither on the wrist nor on the bike.
