Based on this and your post on maps loading slowly, I would guess your physical memory is full or your OS is somehow corrupted.

Try to reboot your watch and if that doesn’t work, factory reset.

Thanks, but It says 18.5gb left, crazy thing is calculating the route takes a ridiculous ammount of time, then keeps recalculating for no reason repeatedly

It appears there is a correlation between slow maps and battery drain. Fix one, you likely fix the other.

make hard reset then delete maps and download them again and install them. If it will not help then try to install latest beta and make hike again. 

You say it accurately. Sadly Garmin has taken the worst of other options and made them worse. I really regret having commited to a garmin 8, and even more disappointed in Garmins intransigent attitude to giving my money back and freeing me of the disappointment. It’s my vow - never again do I, or my family, or my friends buy into Garmin without my voicing the shoddy product. 

I only got it because of the dive features but the other stuff never caused problems on my previous mk2i, if it carries on like this with no improvement with next update I'll ditch it, get a fenix 7 pro and a separate dive watch, its looking like they cant do everything,  its notable with apple they dont write apps others do but they perfect the hardware/software and apps have to fit into that framework

I get sense garmin aren't doing that, judging by maps and battery issues it appears they don't even test their own kit properly before release! maybe its all done on emulators that are far more powerful than the watch is then its released after quite limited testing so always behind the curve, im shocked by maps performance tbh, that's their bread and butter

Yes, Garmin sure blew it on this release. I really think this is going to hurt their sales badly. Many loyal Garmin users all over the internet are very upset and saying they won't be buying another Garmin product again. Between the pricing compared to the competitors and the fact that the competition has gotten way more competitive as of late, I think Garmin made a huge mistake not waiting to release a properly tested and refined product. Especially since most of the competition doesnt seem to have this issue(maybe they actually test their products and push the release until they are ready). They already were bleeding customers I bet just due to the high pricing comparatively(especially on this release). Not to mention the fact that many of the top athletes are sponsored by the competition drawing amateurs to their products instead of Garmin. It's sad really as they have some good features and ideas. All that is moot though if the watch is not reliable and bug free(especially for athletes). I always have been a Garmin fan and used their products since the early 2000's. Now, I might have to look elsewhere for my GPS needs. 

With a "hard reset" you mean setting the watch back via the watch menu or by holding buttons while the watch reboots?
I also would like to have the cleanest start possible and wonder if there is a difference of how the reset was done.
