11.10 Battery drain - support is not support

Hi all,

so support is not answering to my questions and the try to answer me with “systems answer”.

Battery drain is big after 11.10 update.

I tried remove Garmin device file. Factory reset device after unpairing device and watch, I was sure don’t install CIQ apps that can propably cause problem.

Nothing works and Garmin is not able to write me: Sorry, we made bad update, we will fix it in next week.

Is it normal from support? When OnePlus phones started I had problems and support worked in same way, but after year they started collecting bug reports and their device now work like a charm. Why? Because their software are tested by professional big hunters.

  • Can anyone confirm, that just by reverting to 10.10 without any downgrading of BT or GPS battery consumption returns to normal level?

  • I can confirm that for me that DIDN'T work.

  • For me it's back to normal after reverting to 10.10 but I keep BT disabled by default.

Anyway I had ~12% per hour drain on 11.10 with BT disabled so I don't think that is the problem, who knows.

On 10.10 I have HR on and had some activities with gps, everything is normal, I lose 1% battery over sleep (HR on no pulse ox), used wifi, normal usage with no problem.

What I can think of is that somehow GPS remains enabled on 11.10, I use GLONASS for all my activities and I live in a concrete apartment with no gps signal inside. If it's trying to locate me all the time, that will explain such a drastic battery drain.

  • I can confirm that I have a similar problem with my garmin fenix 6x pro. Using the previous firmware, the watch itself calculated the battery consumption from 100% for about 46 days (BT on manually, wifi off, HR on, without activities). Now it is 30 days, but even that seems optimistic, because in a few days, with BT turned on for several hours a day, the battery was discharged to 75%. Until recently, there were no such problems. I did not perform a hard reset, because I am not sure that it will help, and I have a lot of data (maps, POIs, tracks) and personalized settings. If every update is going to be such that I have to do a hard reset, then I guess I'll go back to my Casio Protrek ...

  • Just to chime in with my experience on 11.10.
I bought the watch (6X Sapphire) last Wednesday. First thing I did was charge it to 100%.
During the first night it upgraded itself from version 6.0-something to 11.10. After that I have installed some faces and widgets, fiddled around quite a bit (as you do with new things), made two 1 hour activities with GPS. Have BT and some notifications always on and Puls OX only during 23:00-06:00. Today almost precisely one week later I have 61% left.
So I don't think it is an generic problem with 11.10 but rather some combination of earlier versions or settings that trigger the drain.

  • I just did a 47 min run with 6xplus and had 3.5% drain during run. I’ve never really looked at the battery % drop after an activity but is this considered normal?  I have 100km race with approximately 15-17 hrs of running I better not have issues

  • If you are gonna use music as well as GPS you gonna cut it close...

  • Hey guys,

Just in case you've not seen yet, 11.75 Beta is out now. https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=15167

I'm just installing, will test and report on battery performance.

    Package includes:

    ANT_BLE_BT_v606
    GPS_v460
    SensorHub_v800
    System_1175
    WiFi_v260
    (System_Backdate_v1110)

    Fingers crossed.

  • Just to continue with the report on my experience, I have received a replacement (without box, so i guess it is refurbished). Since first contact at the end of August I finally was sent an RMA number mid September and received the replacement about 1 week later.

I still have not checked the battery, but overall this solves some problems that I was experiencing and that many have reported about the first units (blue hue screen, rattle noise for vibration, etc.).

Still, no word about what was the nature of the issue. For all I know, the battery may have failed, which is worrisome, since it was only one year after purchase, and this may potentially happen again just as the warranty expires.

  • Just to update on my experience.

After going back and forth with various firmware and scrutinising logs inside the watch, I came to the conclusion that the battery was at fault.

It's seems to be very coincidental that the battery has gone "soft" at the same time as the update, but I have no evidence to say otherwise.

To resolve this for good is spoken to Garmin Australia whom seemed to be very helpful at first. However, having submitted my usage logs to them I heard nothing for a over a week. And as my warranty was about to expire, I decided to speak to the retailer (Rebel Sport) about possible exchange.

To my surprise and delight they had no qualms about it and sorted out a swap for a replacement unit. Full marks for customer service.

Ten months of battery life, however, doesn't fill me with optimism.
