EASY Round

GLANCE WATCH FACE app won THE BEST NEW WATCH FACE APP OF 2022 ! At the Developers conference Garmin announced nominees and winners for the best apps in different categories. Glance Watch Face was nominated and won in the best new watch face category Slight smile! Garmin didn't post the video from the conference yet, but it was already reported by other websites: https://the5krunner.com/2022/10/12/garmin-app-watchface-of-the-year-2022-ciq-winners-and-nominees-announced/

The idea for this app is simple:
- Use only large fonts, so that all data are visible at a glance (hence the name of the app: Glance   )
- Put as much data on the screen as possible, without sacrificing font size above
- Make all data fields customizeable to your needs
- Make colors customizeable as much as possible, so users can create their own design

The "Glance Watch Face" app is 100% FREE - no hidden restrictions, nagging, or expiration:

There is also a mostly free app - BIG EASY: apps.garmin.com/.../86ec352b-da01-4806-8972-770c6d32a5e8

There are also two paid versions of this app - "Glance Pro":

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/ac4be3ce-f0f3-4c49-be01-5fa52614ab2b

and "Glance Dual Screen":

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/5c0fe72b-f045-4366-a878-d3e67c600868

Paid versions are identical to the free version (so no worries, FREE doesn't mean bad!), but have a lot of extra features features:

  • Open Weather Map support
  • Setting for TIME font weight
  • New way to use shared color themes
  • Support for many new metrics (like Body Battery, Stress Level, and lots more)
  • Extra progress bars and Graphs (in Dual Screen only)
  • Two separate data screens (in Dual Screen only)
  • A lot more - see apps description for the full list
  • You have an opportunity (and a small incentive) to support the development Slight smile

Unique feature of the Glance apps - you can save your own Color Themes and quicly switch between them righ on the watch.

NEW: Now you can SHARE your Color Theme! You can also quickly apply Color Themes shared with you. Here is a full description of how it all works: https://www.mobiledriveway.com/glance.html#color

Here is the current Color Themes Gallery: https://www.mobiledriveway.com/glance_gallery.html

Color themes are compatible between "Glance" and "Glance Pro" (except for "inactive status icons color", which became obsolete in "Pro").

I'd love to see all color combinations you came up with. Please post your themes in the Reviews and I'll add them to the gallery!

Questions and suggestions are welcome!

  • I've got it installed and played with it a little bit.  So far it seems to be working well.  I am learning the rhythms necessary to get the watch to detect a wrist flick to change screens.  At the moment I have it set to one turn plus return to main after 1-2 minutes.  I'm not sure that 1-2 minutes is accurate as it seem to sometimes switch back after mere seconds, but I could be activating the wrist flick by accident.

When it switches screens faster than in 1-2 min, it is because the app detects a change in power states (most likely accidental). BTW, 1-2 minutes is used because I can't guarantee exact time in a watch face app. Big updates happen once per minute (the change is to big to be applied in per second updates).

The trick to wrist gesture is to start with watch ON (usually lighted), then twist away and see screen dimmed, then twist back toward you to wake the watch up.

A little circuitous but I understand the settings screen is probably getting out of control.  I wonder, have you ever considered a simple web app that generates theme strings?

Theme string contains 26 different values at the moment (colors, formating, etc). More than half of them are applied to the second screen (fonts, colon, and some other settings always stay the same). That would mean a 20 more settings added to already huge list. Theme string is a necessary workaround for it. It is a bit cumbersome for sure, but you get used to it fast. Customize menu allows you to apply user themes to the second screen directly on your watch now.

And a Web app is not really an option - it is a lot of work...

  • Not exactly the same, but I know that SHN EDO watchface can flip between power saving and normal screens on gesture apps.garmin.com/.../dcaedb61-a7b6-4bf1-a336-5a39dab18b2c

Thanks for the info! I take my claims of a ground breaking feature back Disappointed

  • Would you add Enduro into the list of supported devices? It has 112K memory limit for watch face, as much as Forerunner 255 or Fenix 6 Pro. And the both of those are in the list of supported devices.

Forerunner 255 has 124KB of memory. Fenix 6 indeed has 108KB, just like Enduro, and it got on the list by mistake - I'll remove it in the next update.

Normally 108K is enough for the new app, but in my testing I saw peak memory usage of over 110K. I will temporarily enable support for Enduro, so you can test. Please let me know how it works.

  • Will the upgrade replace Glance Pro and/or will my setup be brought over?

No, it is a separate app.

What is most efficient way for a Glance Pro user to install this Ground Breaking App?

Sadly, it is no longer called groundbreaking Disappointed - apparently this feature has been used before (though for different purpose perhaps). Quickest way to adapt the new app is to install it and copy the color theme string from the Glance Pro. All metrics will have to be chosen manually. But that is a good thing - now you have few more options to play with!

Asking about tides again, sorry to be persistent but there is a new watchface that is offering tides.

I know that tides are important, but it is not a trivial task. Perhaps one day I'll get to it, but it most likely would be in a separate app. Thanks for the confidence, but I don't think it will happen soon, sorry.

  • Can I ask how Sun Position works when it is on the new middle bars and not the arc bar?  Since you can only set one color, it seems to show sunset all night long?  I assume it will reset at dawn?  Not sure if this is intended but it doesn't seem right.

  • Just tried to install it on Enduro, but installation fails without any error - asks for permissions, spins for a second or two, and then shows Install button again.

I'll review it tomorrow - maybe a fix is required.

This is the Garmin Connect IQ issue. Please try installing through Garmin Express or wait till tomorrow - I just published the update and it takes time to be seen correctly by Connect IQ.

  • Is there a list of the additional metrics in the Glance Dual available somewhere? I can see various references to "full list below" or "see FAQs", but can't seem to find any actual detail. I'm a very happy Glance Pro user, and the dual screen concept doesn't really interest me, but additional metrics ... maybe!

  • Is there a list of the additional metrics in the Glance Dual available somewhere?

I must have deleted the list by accident. Basically it is the following:

    • Graphs in metrics (for now only 3 - heart rate, pressure, and altitude)
    • 2 Middle progress bars
    • Top and bottom metrics will have icons if Arc bar next to them is disabled.

    More features might be coming.

Just installed it. It works good on Enduro even with 2 screens configured, I have not noticed any issues yet. Though I'm not a fun of dual screen. I really like horizontal progress bars and rendering icons for the top/bottom fields. I wonder if you could backport at least horizontal progress bars to Glance Pro app.
