Because I want to keep this datafield and the app free for use I would be very grateful about a small donation to PayPal

A detailed description of how to use it can be found here:

Thanks very much to mcinner1 for putting so much time into this documentation!

  • Okay. I have understood now.

    Thanks.

  • I played around with this on my ride today.  The arrow on the map screen is stable and points north both while riding and while stopped.  BTW the specs for the 830 say it has a compass and there is a calibration screen for the compass, but I can find no screen on data field to let you look at its output so....   Anyway, the DIY north element is stable and points north while stationary.  If I rotate the front wheel, the arrow will pivot to north.  When I ride however, the arrow jumps around all over the place.  At times it even points south.  Once I stop, it stabilizes pointing north.  I set Nr of values at 20 to see if I could quiet it down.  It is not clear if that did anything.

  • No Edge device has a compass, even there is a page called „compass“ - look at specs here (Sensors):
    https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/621232#specs

    In contrast to this, a compass is listed under sensors for the fenix watches, for example:
    buy.garmin.com/.../641530

    But that is not really the question here if you tell that the north-arrow on your mapscreen behaves differently to the DIY north arrow.

    Sorry, I cannot confirm that strange behaviour on my Edge 1030 or Edge 1000, where the DIY arrow works identically to the map-arrow.

  • Just one last try...

    This is the small code for an arrow to set on the mapscreen datafield on your Edge 830 for better checking.

    (Sorry if you did it already...)

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <DIYLayout>
        <Device name="Edge 830"/>
        <LayoutElement type="1" color="FFFFFF" x="0" y="0" x2="246" y2="65" eletype="RF" valuetype="FX" daynight="false" radius="0" stroke="1" nr_values="1"/>
        <LayoutElement type="1" color="000000" x="39" y="33" x2="0" y2="0" eletype="DT" valuetype="SN" daynight="false" radius="16" stroke="2" nr_values="1"/>
    </DIYLayout>

  • I put the above code  on the map screen and got the same basic result.  Points north when stopped, jumps all around while riding.   Screenshot here shows it pointing far from north.  I am guessing there must be something different about the 830 vs the 1030.  The reason I thought the 830 had a compass is in this post

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-830/168657/compass-calibration-and-functionality   I misspoke when I said it was in the specs.  Anyway I will give up on a north arrow unless you discover something new.  The rest of the app is working fantastic!

  • Ok, you‘re right about compass. If Alan confirms - I do believe!

    Apparently there is indeed a difference with the 830. Sorry for that...

  • Another thought:
    You write that the DIY arrow goes crazy only when you ride your bike. At home he acts normal.
    So if the Edge 830 does have a magnetic compass, is it possible that your bike is generating magnetic interference? There have been cases described, for example, where the Garmin geomagnetic speed sensor on the rear wheel doesn't work because the chain has magnetized.
    Have you ever tested the DIY arrow with another bike or in a car?

    (ok, that would not explain, why the map-arrow behaves differently...)

  • I also observed the "compass screen" but it behaved as expected.  It looks like whatever data Garmin is feeding you is not correct.  Possibly a bug in the 830?

  • A little update for the designer only. Version 2.7.8 is available.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    2.7.8 (Designer only!)
    * XML files are now stored/read correctly as UTF8. Thanks to bodenseematze for the Utf8Helper!
    * fixed bug where it was not possible to add a space in the text field

    regards

    Erich

  • Tried with another bike and had the same problem.  Could also see it to a lesser extent with a brisk walk.
