(RESOLVED) - GPS Accuracy Issues Starting January 1st 2021

Fenix 6X Pro - s/w 13.10

My last 2 walking routes seem to be way off the mark when viewed on a map, whether in Garmin Connect or Strava. One had me starting 5 miles away.

Any reason for this? Is the GPS accuracy really bad? Are there any tips to improve accuracy?

Thanks for any assistance.

  • Have you tried a GPS soak?

  • You may want to try a reset of the watch. I've never had to wait more than 20-30 seconds for the watch to go green and be ready...

  • Interestingly things seem to have improved (for now).

Just went outside and looked at the Map screen, got a GPS lock within a few seconds and then when jumping between activity screens Walk > Run > Ride > Trail Walk etc the watch maintained it’s green GPS lock where previously it did the full red re-sync, and took a long time to do it. It always showed full GPS signal strength but sadly we don’t appear to be able to see how many satellites there are now.

  • I think what Tim_B meant is the "soaking" a.k.a. "not moving for 5 minutes" waiting for GPS to fix itself, on one of the most expensive watch on the market...

I second that. I have 2 tries so far since yesterday.

1st try yesterday: CPE was still showing "expired"

I tried "soaking" yesterday. Starting point was off about 1km south-west when GPS signal turned green, after 1 or 2 minutes, it jumped to my correct location; I then started my run and got back with a very inaccurate route (i.e. jumping around my real route, and I have run that particular route countless times without issues) though not as bad as my race on 02/01/2020 without "soaking"

2nd try today: CPE was showing "current"

I didn't try "soaking" today as I thought the CPE "current" was the final fix. When GPS signal turned green, I started the run. To my surprise when I finished my normal 8km run, Garmin Connect showed me that I started from nowhere and ended up in nowhere. Very disappointed.

I used to have multiple Fitbit watches before I switched to Garmin Vivoactive 3 (and loved it!), just upgraded to Fenix 6 Pro Solar as my Christmas present this year... so far I had more problems with Fenix 6 than Vivoactive 3...

    My run today:

  • I have a Garmin 6s in Australia. Up until this week it has been great! But my last two runs have been WAY off. I checked and the CPE says current, however, the map and pace tracking is still not great! When is it proposed for this to be fixed? If the CPE is current why is this still an issue? Thanks for your help! :)

  • Two runs yesterday one off-road and one parkrun. GPS was fine without any issues. GPS+GLONASS new Zealand

--  That's interesting, as it turned out to be a system-wide problem affecting lots of people.  What did you do differently?  My 6x was off about 0.25 miles to the West.

  • I've never had to wait more than 20-30 seconds for the watch to go green and be ready...

I need to wait like 5 min before green. Sometimes green is not comming (outside ofc)

  • Any update on this issue? Do you know something or how long it will take ?

  • It IS resolved:

So I understand that Garmin has introduced a new feature to his new watches called GPS "Soaking" - He ignores users who still have problems and Warsaw is 1306 m above sea level according to this gadget. Looks like a problem solved :)
