Corrupted swim files

Seems to happening with increasing frequency now. As soon as I ended my swim the screen went straight to the blue triangle screen. I've also had times in the past where it shows up in Garmin connect as a multisport event - with just a swim. Garmin Connect, Strava and TrainingPeaks don't recognise the file. Garmin support have not been helpful over email. Going to call tomorrow.

I cannot click into the activity data on the watch and the swim icon just has a dotted line icon instead of being filled in and blue.

Any one else experiencing this issue?

  • Incredible on multiple levels. Point blank saying they’ve never heard of this issue. But also offering me a refurb watch, that itself is an acknowledgement that something is wrong ?

I’ve actually have two swims save in a row. If it crashes again I’ll do another factory reset but if a refurb has the same software then it won’t change a thing.

Should clarify I live in New Zealand and have to contact Garmin Australia for support

  • Well my worry is they don’t even know what’s causing it. They should!

I’ll follow up in a couple weeks to see what ‘engineering’ have found out. I’m tempted to get a refurb and then sell it to buy a Polar or Coros. From friends I’ve heard nothing but good things and I’m sure support would be better.

  • Garmin Spain is even worse. They don't seem to read. They just copy and paste the typical factory reset email again and again.

I fear that it's not only a software issue since some people never had this issue. Maybe some kind of hardware deficiency that affects a minimum percentage of devices so Garmin doesn't need to acknowledge anything at all

There's your problem right away LOL! I am in New Zealand too and can only say that I've had nothing but good support from them.

depending on the person you reach they have very different informations

Unfortunately that is the same with support staff all over. Unless you are able to escalate your query to a higher level you are stuck with firstline people who may or may not be interested enough (or allowed/able) to offer anymore than the script they likely have in front of them.

my worry is they don’t even know what’s causing it.

If it was a universal problem then obviously the fix would be much easier. However, as that is not the case it's much harder. Even more difficult as we all use our watches in different ways and have different set-ups.

And, as I've noted, in my part of NZ (Hawke's Bay) the people I know pool swimming are not having the problem, or at least not telling me if they are.

  • It’s a roll of the dice every time I go swimming whether it will save or not. As I said I’m on a run of two in a row saving but previously to that I had 8 swims in 10 that didn’t save through December and January.

  • FYI everyone. Looks like a fix in the latest software update  I’m on four successful swims in a row. Only took them 7 months to patch

  • From the international website, there is no details about any bug fix for versions 13. 10 to 13.30100.

Changes made from version 13.00 to 13.30:

    • Improved syncing of data with Garmin Connect Mobile.

Hope that the issue is resolved but I'm sceptical.

  • I am suspicious, too. 13.30 is for non-Pro models? So does that mean Pro versions still have the issue? I'm unable to swim and test at the moment due to lockdown restrictions here in the UK.

  • The issue is not limited to a syncing problem with Garmin Connect Mobile because the session is saved corrupted in our Fenix 6 and is unreadable in its chronology.
However, I am continuing to save the sessions by holding the watch underwater and pressing the save confirmation when the scrolling summary (the one that appears by pressing the STOP button for the first time at the end of the session) shows me the total swim distance.
Since doing this I have no more corrupted sessions and have never reset the F6.

  • This is not a syncing problem.

That's why I'm not sure that Garmin has fixed this problem.

By the way, I always press the stop button on the total distance screen. But I still have some random crashes.

I'm just unsure when the 13.30 was installed on my watch. Since last week I had 3 swimming activities without a crash. But doesn't mean anything to me as the crashes are totally random.

Also for those whom may be interessed ...... If you're on Strava you can still try to download the file directly from the watch to Strava (via the USB cable on the computer) ; I did it and could retrieve some  incomplete data... Intervals were correct but not distance or  total time.
