Fenix 6 Pro GPS Problem accuracy

Hi,

I am experiencing problems with GPS accuracy. On certain occasions it seems that the signal is lost and the precision is lost by more than 4 meters.
Currently i hace this config:

  • Data recording  every second
  • GPS + GLONASS
  • 3D speed On
  • 3D distance On

I've been reset several time the watch and the problem persist. and doesn't seem a problem with the tree or the weather. There is not any building nearby or great structures that can obstruct the signal

Please take a look

Hi Again.

Same problema. Only GPS config.

I'm very disappointed with the precision of the watch. It's obvious that are more than 10m of gap

  • I tried some more testing of my own 6X Pro Solar against four other devices, this time riding seven laps of a short trail loop. The purpose was not only to test for accuracy, but also consistency. The 6X did great. My benchmark V800 did less well by comparison. So I think the 6X can perform well.

Maybe it is the mountains creating problems for the OP. Or If not signal blocking then maybe reflections.

Seven laps from 6X fitted just on the handlebars just left of centre. Each lap was 0.69km.

Seven laps from V800 fitted to the handlebars just right of centre...

  • Hi /eezytiger

could you show us the config that you use in your running.

    kind regards

  • This was a cycling activity, but at average speed of 19kph, so a strong pace for running. I cannot run at the moment due to knee injury. My results at walking pace are just as good in similar terrain.

I use GPS + GLONASS always and I try lo let GPS soak for a few minutes before I start recording. This might be inside the house while I get ready - I get a green satellite ready bar indoors - and then a little extra outdoors before I begin. If I remember I also set altitude manually at the start, although usually it is already correct within 5m. I use one second recording and none of the 3D features.

Testing in the past has shown similar accuracy from GPS alone, but I figure that if GLONASS does not make things worse I should have it enabled for extra security of more satellites. I have found GPS + Galileo to be disappointing, with wobbly tracks every time I've tried. I no longer waste my time with it. I'm in the UK, east of London. Galileo might work as well or better for others elsewhere in the world.

    • On handlebar everything has better track. During running your wrist is moving up and down and the (good) firmware is able to compensate/eliminate this movement by other sensors (gyros), a wrong one cant and the track will be wobby
  • Yes, sure. That's why I mentioned that walking is also good performance from the watch, but it is clear that environment is significant. My best tracks are in open countryside. Less good, but still acceptable in suburban streets. Woodland is the worst, but still good, considering.

I have not used the watch in mountainous regions, but I have used other watches and cycling computers in the French Alps and they often struggle.

Edit : I dug up some old examples from Lacets de Montvernier over three summers.

2018 Wahoo ELEMNT vs Garmin Fenix 3 HR

     .

I think Garmin has had a real problem with GPS performance in the past. The examples above from the Edge Touring Plus and F3HR are abysmal. I have three Fenix watches and they have all required multiple firmware iterations to get to acceptable levels of performance. The 6X has got there now, for me at least, and the 3HR took two years from release to make it. The 5X+ is still a bit hit and miss, but better than it was.

I should be going to the Alps in June, so a golden opportunity to test the 6X on the same climb. It surely will not be worse than it's its predecessors. Can it match the ELEMNT, I wonder. Unfortunately all bets are off right now due to coronavirus and numerous restrictions, not least 14 days quarantine on arrival each way.

  • And most people would because they like the idea of 3m accuracy. However the reality probably lies somewhere between the two.

  • galileo has 1m accuracy and less in paid variant.

  • Hi Guys,

    Today run

    • Data recording  every second
    • GPS + GALILEO
    • 3D speed On
    • 3D distance On

here we can see that the GPS signal was lost

I just used fenix 6 pro, I tested it in the standard stadium, the result is about 100 meters wrong.

I have tried all of 3 gps modes in standard stadium and they are incorrect

    1. GPS only

    2. GPS + Glonass

    3. GPS + Galileo

So GPS on Fenix 6 pro has problem
