Course - Use Map ... Calculating never ends

I tried to use for Run activity previously created by Garmin Connect course for 13.5 km.
As I tried courses early with Course set to Course and found it difficult to follow in case if I missed some turn as it simply try to return me on track.
I decided to change Course - Use Map as it should reroute in case of I will be off course.

I started Course with this settings and Calculating seems never completed. I waited more than 10 mins and it still Calculating.
Please help as I really need this functionality.

I tried it few times for different courses, rebooted watch no luck.

  • I guess that I will disappoint you, but this is how it 'works'.

Course calculation on the watch level is very slow... It is supposed to work better once GPS signal is established, however my experiece would suggest it does not make a big difference.

  • 13.5km is indeed quite a lot of "routing" to be asking the watch to do - its processor is nowhere near as powerful as one you'd find in a proper handheld GPS or smartphone. It can route short courses with few turns pretty well, but once you ask it to calculate a complex route involving dozens of turns, it can take forever, or not work at all.

Also, just to clarify, was this route off-road or on-road? Calculating off-road routes is a much more complex calculation for the watch, than calculating routes on known roads.

  • Thnx. I tried after GPS fix was established.

  • It was on road. Actually city downtown.
honestly I need this function for long run like 20 - 40 km as I tired to use well known routes where I did training hundred of times.

  • How about routes available in Garmin Connect? It can also be used as a course once you will send it to device.

You can also try traces from Endomondo, saved by other users. It can be exported externally, so you should be able to use it on the device.

These are the only external sources that came to my mind instead of calculated-on-the-spot.

  • It was automatically created round course in GC. Then sent to watch. If I use it with setting Course - Course it works. But when I make wrong turn it is hard to return to actual course.

based on doc Course - Use Map should navigate you back to the course actual route dynamically. It is what I want to have.

  • I guess I'm not understanding why it's hard to navigate back to the course after making a wrong turn. Can't you just use the map screen to see where the course is in relation to your current position? If you're too far off-course to see it on the map anymore, you can zoom out.

  • none of the responses here address the actual problem - when your using "use map" on a course that was created with Garmin Connect, you're actually telling the watch to route point to point on a track that has hundreds of points.
    You have 2 options:

    1. Create a route with Garmin Explore with a small (up to 200 if I'm not mistaken but preferable much less) number of points and then route on watch with "use map"

    2. Create a track on garmin connect (or import into app) and then navigate on watch with "follow course"

Garmin should have better documentation on this and identify this on the watch but they don't

  • It is not so easy when 1) you are running high tempo 2) running 20 or more km 3) can’t follow exact route cos of inappropriate road condition like repair

  • Thank you for info.
is route created by GC as automatic round trip for desired distance somehow different than created manually by Garmin Explore?
ie why it is possible to Use Map for Explore courses and it is not acceptable for courses by GC?
