Course - Use Map ... Calculating never ends

I tried to use for Run activity previously created by Garmin Connect course for 13.5 km.
As I tried courses early with Course set to Course and found it difficult to follow in case if I missed some turn as it simply try to return me on track.
I decided to change Course - Use Map as it should reroute in case of I will be off course.

I started Course with this settings and Calculating seems never completed. I waited more than 10 mins and it still Calculating.
Please help as I really need this functionality.

I tried it few times for different courses, rebooted watch no luck.

  • Great. Happy to have helped Slight smile and good find on the import courses in the explore web interface

  • I use" plotaroute "..... I get turn by turn arrows.... also way points at the same time..... as well as the turn info actually printed on the map screen as well! (follow course routing)

So I get the two Garmin choices of turn arrows and way points and text map info at the same time... just save as a fit file.... and place it in the Garmin newfiles folder....

    Why use garmin software lol...

  • Plotaroute works great, I've been very happy with how well the courses it creates have worked on my Fenix. The only downside is that it has limited offroad trails - so when I'm creating courses for hiking, I often have to draw them manually because it doesn't know there's a trail there, whereas the Garmin software often has the trail. But otherwise it works very well for road courses and major trails.

  • Make sure you are using Openstreemap in PlotaRoute. It should have the same paths as Garmin maps (as they are also mostly based on OSM)

  • This feature used to work flawlessly.  I believe it must have been the last update about a month ago. After the update, my watch would do a reset as soon as I hit navigate.  Now, a couple of weeks after trying to figure this out, my watch is giving the never-ending "Calculating" as soon as I hit goto...

    Sheesh

Does anyone have a summary of the solution for this?

From reading the forum, I am not clear on whether to use plot a route, Garmin Explore etc.

I want to be able to to use the "Use Map" routing option, but experience the same problem that it just hangs on Calculation for ages.

I have tried creating a route and then copying it into the New Files Folder on Garmin, but this make it unknown to Garmin Connect, which means I then cannot create a PacePro Strategy etc.

    Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

It depends on what you are creating. If it is a bike or run, Garmin Connect works best - Creating a Course in Garmin Connect. You can also use the Explore APP or the Explore website.

  • Hi Chris, I would like to use Garmin Connect but it send different datas to Fenix 6 instead of Edge 830.

With Fenix 6 seems that it send the same datas when Fenix did not have maps inside. It send all turn by turn information like they are waypoint/coursepoint Disappointed

Unfortunately this approach means that is not possible to use coursepoint manually added in Garmin Connect and this is not written in any Garmin manual or website.

Do you have any plan to integrate in Fenix series the navigation from Edge devices?

    • Good tip. I was having the same issues with long calculation times. I import gpx files via routecourse 3rd party app, but had the same when using Garmin Explorer. Changed to follow course rather than use map when setting up the activity from the course and it took seconds as mentioned above. Thanks!
  • Still curious about tracks vs routes, I’ve used garmin explore to convert to routes to exclude base camp and limit the number of points (breadcrumbs) as annoying when the course is imported (sometimes?). Base camp created poor routes as it struggled on paths as was hinted to above. Also some of the routes appeared to be much longer (10x) than the original track once imported. Maybe I’m doing something wrong there, but to a separate but related question, do you have any tips to ensure more complete routes or manually override sections it misses or goes the wrong way?

btw I’m using routecourse to import gpx files made on Outdooractive (but you could use several other 3rd party apps), and also use a second method of using garmin connect for planning routes, but have also tested using GE to convert GPX tracks and then converting to routes. Kamoot seemed to work too. As I posted elsewhere on this  section, using the follow route rather than use map helped solve my overall calculating time issue.
