No GPS fix, CPE file missing again

After a period of functioning normally last GPS track had a flaw in it. Did not give it to much attention but after starting an activity yesterday I noticed that the watch fails to get a GPS fix.

There is a CPE file on the watch (checked this) but the watch says it is missing. Tried the soak thing but that did not help. Had this problem before. That time the watch started functioning normally after lots of resets. I don't want to go in to this procedure again because it would mean losing all settings again.

Any suggestions to get the CPE file loaded again?

  • I have the problem start from two weeks ago right after firmware upgrade from 6.1 to 8.1. no solution yet, please share any idea to solve it, thanks.

  • I tried several scenario this morning, share my failure recovery experience.

    1) I removed REMOTESW folder completely, turn off the watch. Then turn on again, synch with GE, can see REMOTESW folder come back with CPE.bin file. But GPS not work at all, no signal when I check with force testing mode. tried synch time via GPS in open air area no signal.

after that, I though another way

    2) remove REMOTESW folder completely, turn off the watch. Then turn on again, check there is no REMOTESW folder under Garmin folder via USB connection. then I remove the USB connection and wear my watch outside for run. I found GPS signal is good in open air area. it works very well for synch time via GPS. active run via map, can find GPS after couple of minutes. I start to run but the signal is not following... at the end, I played outside around 1.5 hours with good signal but no any routine track is saved by watch.  after back to home, connect USB again confirm there is no REMOTESW folder in the watch.

I checked several time, it always showed CPE missing at different condition all the time.

no idea how to move on...

    nice catch Thumbsup

...would you mind checking when possible?

    • on your watch in the GARMIN folder there is a file called garmindevice.xml
      • open with text editor or xml editor
      • search for CPE and check the folder just above
      • is it GARMIN/REMOTESW ? like below

    happy & safe sporting

  • yes, I checked yesterday same as above.

  • You could try deleting the garmindevice.xml & device.fit files & restarting the watch. The watch will then rebuild these files.

You could then see if you can get the CPE to update

  • I sent the watch back to the store where I bought it and they sent me a new one. I was afraid to update a bit, but I did it and for now the watch has no problems catching the GPS signal.

    Thank for help.

  • For what it is worth, my Fenix 6X Pro on ver 9.00 stopped connecting to GPS several days ago, after I had it just 3 weeks.  Used this thread to find that it show CPE missing.  Used the Android utility on my Mac to try deleting CPE (which was there, dated yesterday) and then remotesw folder entirely.  Neither of those worked.  I'd previously reset the watch, power cycled.   Then I set watch to connect to WiFi and synced over WiFi, boom the menu showed CPE current.  I can sync to GPS again, though it seems to take a little longer than it did new out of the box.  I need to do additional testing, thought I'd share my experience.
