Fenix 6X constantly locking up (freezing)

A week ago I purchased the Fenix 6X Sapphire (upgrading from the 235). Since setting up this device it's constantly been locking up at different times. I've begun recording the history today (feb20) so the information prior is to the best of my recollection. Has anyone with the same watch been experiencing similar issues and so frequently? I've contacted Garmin but may return to the reseller for a refund or exchange depending on how "normal" this issue is. In addition, there seems to be tiny specks or bubbles, under the HR sensor. While I am a little OCD this wouldn't really bug me unless it got worse or began to interfere with the functionality of the device. I mention this as it's only been a week since purchasing and somehow may be related to the constant lockups. 

Each time I had to do a soft reset after locking up to use the device again (holding the light button down until it shuts off)

Sat Feb 15 locked up at some point while I was sleeping - data lost after reboot

Sun Feb 16 Locked up when beginning an activity, installed current firmware and worked for a bit before locking up later while trying to begin another activity

Sun Feb 16 I factory reset the device after contacting Garmin and everytime I tried to sync to my Android or PC it would lock the device, After attempting 15+ times I gave up

Mon Feb 17 I tried to sync again and to my surprise it worked the first time

Wed Feb 19 Locked up when plugging into PC (Not readable by PC and charging screen and time (which never changes) stayed on watch after disconnecting) reset about 5+ times until it worked

Wed Feb 19 Checked time at 11PM and it was stuck no buttons worked except light on and off

Thu Feb 20 Crashed earlier while trying to sync to phone

Thu Feb 20 3:59 PM when trying to access the menu (briefly holding power button) locked up device

 In addition about 60% of the time when I try to power off the device through the menu, it gets stuck with the power logo on the screen and reboots itself after 10-15 seconds. This usually happens while the phone is connected but has happened less often while the bluetooth was disabled.  It has YET to lock up during an activity. When it works it works and there is no cause I can identify yet that triggers it to lockup and no warning it's going to.

Anyone experience anything similar with the new watch and were you able to resolve it?

  • It seems like there is something seriously wrong. I have never had my F6 Sapphire lock up. I'd return it.

    I'm waiting on an email reply from Garmin after requesting an RMA but may return to where I purchased for a quicker turnaround...

    How long have you had the watch? I'm assuming awhile.

  • I don't have a 6X sapphire, just a 6 Pro.

    It's never locked up on me.  I've had it 4 weeks now and I've been using it USING IT every day.  Widgets, Some of fbbrowns excellent data screens, custom (garmin) watchface.  Paired with headphones and an HRM-RUN, chasing things using maps etc.

    That's what I love about Garmin stuff, it's rock solid.  I'm sorry you're having a bad experience, but it's far from the norm and I'm sure Garmin will sort you out with a replacement, bug free one.

  • Sometimes Connect IQ Store apps, widgets, watch faces or data fields don't play well with the watch.  If you have any downloaded, I recommend removing all of them and wait a day or two to see if the problem remains since this appears to be a daily occurrence.  If you don't have any Connect IQ items on the watch, or if the problem is still there after removing them, get a replacement ASAP.

    I would go there now if it's somewhere close by. I've found my local supplier very responsive to exchanges if something is wrong. They want my future business after all.

  • I have no APPS from the IQ store installed just out of the box factory items. It also crashed several more times last night - ALMOST always when trying to sync

    Thanks everyone, I'll be exchanging this tomorrow for a new one in hopes the one I had was just a dud with a strange problem.


    For Garmin  ---> I did receive an email response today stating they are happy to assist me and to return it to where I purchased it for a quicker exchange. While probably very true I do find it a little unsettling however that the users on here are far more apologetic of what's been happening than Garmins support - not even a sorry for the experience after spending $1300CDN? I never complained about this to BestBuy and it isn't their product but they even tried to give me $10 for my troubles. Maybe us Canadians just expect a sorry eh? now and again....hah

    For anyone else that may come across this post in the future, I'll update you in the coming days if a replacement resolved my issue.
