Edit: we won, it’s finally added! Garmin, please add E-Bike activity type to the Fenix 6 software and let me change activity type to E-Bike ride in Garmin Connect!

Hi all,

thank you kindly for pitching in to this discussion. I am super happy to report that the feature we all needed now is implemented in the official version of the firmware, I just got the update automatically to my Fenix. I look forward to test it shortly.

thanks!

In Europe, commuting to the train, pulling the kids in the bike-trailer type of riding on pedal-assisted bikes in regular clothing are increasingly common. For me, the hours of these rides rack upp providing active recovery, soft endurance type riding.

As a longtime road and mtb cyclist and when I gear up properly for training or racing on my regular bikes I use a Garmin Edge 530 to display and record all the metrics from power meters etc, strangely enough on that device Garmin gives me the option to record an e-bike activity.

For me it would be really impractical to have to fit and bring my Edge 530 for the pedal-assisted rides in regular clothing mentioned above, especially when I have a Garmin Fenix 6 Sapphire on my wrist. Today I have to record those pedal-assisted rides as a regular bike ride on my Fenix, putting incorrect data into Garmin Connect. Further, I am not allowed to change the activity type to an E-Bike ride (edited) even on Garmin Connect? Then I have to (and can on that platform) manually change it to an e-bike ride on Strava.

Garmin, please add the e-bike activity type you already have available on the edge devices to the Fenix 6 software. Please also add the option of changing activity type to an E-Bike ride (edited) after the fact in Garmin Connect. Thank you!

  • Is downhill mountain bike racing a sport?  You know where you take a chairlift to the top and just ride down?  Curious what you and your colleagues on the Committee of Authorized "Sports" think. And is there a list you have somewhere online so we can make sure we are only spending our free time participating in valid sports?

  • You can take any activity that has enough people interested in it, start an association and call it a "sport".  I think many associate the word sport with athletic.  There are many "sports" that exist where being athletic isn't a prerequisite.

  • If you are concerned about speed vs HR (I don't see why, but whatever), you still have a problem. Ebikes have multiple power settings. How could you ever reconcile the average power setting vs a given speed? All you would end up with is a ride being tagged as an ebike, but with no way to calculate the amount of assistance you got. And why do you classify an ebike ride as 'active recovery' or 'soft endurance', whatever the latter is? You can ride as hard as you want on an ebike. I just completed an ebike ride and posted my highest ever HR (assuming my fenix 6 recorded it accurately; I have my suspicions). But my aerobic rating clocked in at 3.8.

  • +1 There is no sense to have "ebike activity" on 530s and not on the Flagship Fenix 6x ( that is a device really use on MTB / EMTB world )

I simply can’t understand why you’re quibbling with why he wants to keep it in a separate bucket.  What do you care?

I’d like to see the same thing:  an e-bike option on the Fenix watch, for the exact same reasons.

  • Yup, completely agree. I want it for my Venu too.

If there's stand up paddling, why is e-bike so difficult? Just don't get it. The software engineer could probably implement and test it quicker than it would take to read all these posts.

  • One more vote for the ebike activity. Can't be so difficult, in the end it's only one flag to distinguish normal bike from ebike to enable proper syncing and data analysis.

  • One more vote for the ebike activity.

  • So far as I can tell, my Fenix 6 does read PWR from my Turbo Creo but the value is the sum of human pwr and e-assist.  This is definitely not useful as I want to use platform pedals, not my Vector pedals, on the Creo when on soft surfaces where unclipping is a hazard.  Why can't I use my Fenix as a valid recording device?

  • I own a Specialized Turbo Vado and changing the assist level, the power value that I see on the display is inversely proportional to the assist: Higher is the assist, lower Is the power value sent to the Fenix. I think that in my case this value could be near to a real value of power.
