Do you shower with your watch?

I've done this with my f3hr for a long time with no side effects. I loosen the watch strap and wash my wrist underneath and then rinse. I now do this with my f6x Saphhire.

Do you do this? If not, why not?

  • Ok Everyone,

I have been trying to stay out of this thread since there so many great suggestions and I love seeing the forum community sharing ideas and helping one another but I need to jump in and ask that we stay on the subject (Even though all of you are making me laugh).

Most of you know about Garmin's statement and the Support Article ‘Wear and Care Tips for Garmin Watches’.

In this article, it states a few things about this subject to keep in mind.

'Keep Things Dry, thoroughly rinse and allow your device to dry after exposure to sweat from a workout or water from swimming or showering. Prolonged exposure to moisture may result in skin irritation.'

"Things to Avoid, to preserve the appearance of your device and to avoid possible skin irritation, we recommend avoiding exposure to the following chemicals; Insect repellents, moisturizing creams, and lotions, oils, perfumes, sanitizers, soaps, sunscreens, etc."

What does this mean to us and wearing this in the shower? The device is water-resistant, so it is ok to wear it in the shower BUT make sure that you wash off any soap from your device and your skin. Then after the shower, make sure you take it off and dry the watch and the skin under the watch. Personally, I would suggest that you even take it off in the shower to make sure the skin behind the watch gets a moment to breathe and a good wash too. Also using some basic soap (kitchen soap the best), give the wash a good washing. Why? We all are working out hard in the gym and out of the gym; salt, sweat, dirt and whatever else gets between you and your watch. We all clean down the gym equipment and gear after using it and, we do not wear the same workout clothes every day without a good cleaning, so just remember your Garmin is out there with you doing those activities and needs a little love at times too.

Another thing we should talk about too is the band. If you are wearing a leather band, I would suggest you take the watch off before you shower. If you do not know why then we can talk about that later or someone else can help me find a good way to explain. On a side note, remember the leather band is intended for casual wear and is not recommended for vigorous activity. Likewise, if you have a Metal band it might take some time to dry the band due to the water getting in between the links. It is suggested to clean the metal band with a soft, clean lint-free cloth and if you need too, dampen the cloth with water. So, with that said, if you are using a metal band, you might want to just take off the fenix before jumping into the shower to avoid any issues.

To sum up this small bit of information and sorry that it become a small book. It is fine that you wear it in the shower but remember to dry and clean it. The main reason because your skin can become irritated due to the moisture or build upon the inside of the device. It is never fun to have to wait for your skin to recover and/or to wear the watch on the other arm (that personally drives me nuts). I think we are all in agreement that we want to be focusing on our goals, workouts and long walks on the beach, so to do this, just remember to dry and keep the Garmin device clean and you will be out there every day with no issues.

  • Good point about the leather band in the shower.  I wear my silicone band daily now and to work out and only use the suede leather band when I need to be fancy.  I was wearing it daily, removing it when I showered, and then one day I forgot to take it off before my shower and it got wet, and it stays wet for a looong time.

This is great to hear, it sounds like I've been doing it right then:

I put a suction cup hook on my shower wall, so as soon as I get into the shower I take the watch off, give it a good rinse with the shower water, and then hang it on the hook for the rest of the shower. I don't really like the idea of using soap on it all the time, seems like it could get soap residue buildup after a while, especially in the barometer port.

After shower, I just wipe it dry with towel, and put it back in my wrist.

The only thing I haven't been doing, that Heath is saying we should do, is giving it an occasional wash with kitchen soap. I admittedly haven't touched my watch with any soap at all in the 2 months I've had it, I think I'll start giving it a monthly wash with diluted liquid dish soap, because I think he has a good point that water alone may not be enough to remove all the built-up chemicals/oils/salt/etc on the watch.

  • BTW, does anyone usually swap hands wearing the watch on?

  • Nope. I think this may deliver wrong stats.

there is a setting for which hand you wear it on.

  • And have a tan line on both wrists? No thanks Smiley

PS, didn't Garmin-heath post a lengthy (and rather helpful) response in this thread yesterday? Where'd it go?

Only take it off to charge it.  If I need to be showered then I assume my watch does too so we go in together.

NO! I also have numerous dive watches and G shock watches rated to depths far beyond the depth rating of my 6X solar. None should be worn in the shower! In the shower water hits the watch under pressure and is unlike being in a swimming pool or ocean. Do not use in shower! Google "Can A Water Resistant Watch Be Used In the Shower" and see answers for yourself. Solution: Buy a forearm wound protector on Amazon and just slip it on every morning over your watch. Simple, easy and does the trick!
