Default Music Player

I am trying to figure out where to set my default music player. I read online that it should be an option under "Settings," but I don't see it there. I've hunted around a bit, and can't seem to locate it.

Trying to pair with Fenix5s
  • Garmin Connect is getting more and more confusing. Now also important functions are removed (default player).
The selection "default player" must be reactivated - there is no other way.
When will the next "corrected" version be available?

My solution was to downgrade the Connect App to a previous version, 4.1.11 works for me, I can control music on my Vivoactive HR. However my Edge 820 will now not connect to the app as it requires the latest version.

To allow activities to sync I enabled wifi hotspot on my phone so that my Garmin will sync over wifi, eliminating the need to use the app to sync.

My long-term solution is to sell my Edge820 and use my Wahoo Bolt.
  • Is there an update on this? I would really like my vivoactive 3 to work with any music app -the only one I can get it to work with is Google Play???
  • I can no longer control music from my Garmin Vivosmart HR. It no longer recognizes that Spotify is open and none of the music controls function. Between this and the device constantly putting itself into HR broadcast mode, it's become basically useless if I'm not using it alongside my Forerunner. SMH. How do I get this thing to control my music again?

    I found a solution!

I had the same problem with my Garmin Vivoactive 3. Music controller opened Samsung Notes in my phone. After removing Notes, it started to open Google Chrome! Quite annoying. Here is how I fixed the problem. I pet that it will fix the problem also in other Garmin smart watches.

    1. First back up your activities from watch and mobile phone. This can be done by syncing the watch to the mobile phone and check that all the activities are on phone.
    2. Log to the Garmin website to check that activities are there as well.
    3. Backup your phone (just in case, I didn't do that)
    4. Restore defaults to the watch. This is done by going to Settings/System/Restore Defaults
    5. Uninstall Garmin connect from the phone
    6. Clear the cache and memory in the phone. This is how it will be done: Settings/Device Maintenance/Storage/Clean now and Settings/Device Maintenance/Memory/Clean now
--- watch and phone are now clean from Garmin programs ---
    7. Start your preferred music player in the phone
    8. Start your watch
    9. Install Garmin connect to your phone
    10. Create the connection between the watch and phone
    11. Test the music controller in the watch

After this music controller in my watch started working. It also fixed some other problems that were not that serious (sleeping was not recognized and calendar didn't replicated). Now everything is working nicely!

Please, let me know if this fixed the problem in your watch. Let me also know if it didn't help in your case.

    Same problem here.

Please give back the possibility to choose a distinct app as favourite player.

While poweramp (beeing the default player in MIUI 9.5) is playing my fenix will start youtube or google play... :-(

Switched phone recently so no caches to remove.
  • I have a FR235 and a Samsung A5 (2017) with Oreo and the Samsung Music Player. Instead of playing music the controls open Total Commander...
  • I've found that the music controls will sometimes work and other time not. I got frustrated enough to send an e-mail through the garmin support site.
  • My watch also ignores my favorite media player - already running in the background or not - and fires up Google Play Music instead, which I do not use at all.

Anyone from Garmin following this thread? PLEASE FIX THIS S**T.
  • I've opened a tech support case and its been forwarded to the engineering team. I'm going to pass the link to this thread as other examples of people with problems. I keep looking at the (Garmin) Virb cameras, and clicked the Fathers day e-mail but found out the discount was only on the 360, if they had discounted the lower end I'd have seriously considered one. The street price is lower on a GoPro since they are more popular but my VivimoveHR has controls for the Virb only. But after loosing the ability to choose the music payer it concerns me if I were to spent a little more $ on a Garmin camera and then loose that feature. So I've asked if the ability to choose a specific music player could even be added as a feature request if the current dev direction is to use the last one that was playing.
