Default Music Player

I am trying to figure out where to set my default music player. I read online that it should be an option under "Settings," but I don't see it there. I've hunted around a bit, and can't seem to locate it.

Trying to pair with Fenix5s
  • It seems to have disappeared since this latest update to the app. I noticed it was gone too. Now when I press the start button to open my music player it opens whatever it wants, which in my case is Amazon Kindle, and that's not even a music app. So we'll just have to open our music app of choice first and then the controls will work. Not sure why they removed that. Couldn't find it anywhere else.

Bummer-- when I open the music control widget on the watch, it just says "waiting for data." I've started two different music players on my phone (Google Play and Spotify) and my Garmin still doesn't recognize that music is playing
  • Oh that's weird. When I open the music widget it still says "Start Music on Phone". If I press Start (which used to open the default music player on the phone) now it opens up a random app (Amazon Kindle). But if I open my music player from the phone I can still control the music on my watch with the widget.

On mine, I have to open my music app (Napster) AND start the music for it to control the correct app. If I just open Napster without starting the music on my phone, it controls another random app. This change is kinda nice, IMO, as I used to have to change defaults between music player and podcast player, now it follows whatever I have open and playing. Unfortunately, and off topic, this update broke my email notifications too, so I may have to roll back until they fix it.
  • I noticed it was gone as well. For several months, I've been unable to control my music app of choice, Amazon Music. Has anyone been able to make controls for Amazon Music work on their watch? Thanks.

I have confirmed that the setting for Default Music Player was removed as part of the 4.2 app update. The device will now be able to control whatever media player is currently active on the phone.

lindajm22, The Amazon Kindle app is likely opening because there is an option in the app for Audio Books and the watch would be able to start and stop that service.

todd.c.zenner, we are still investigating why Amazon Music is not starting as expected when it is the active music player. We are currently seeing success when starting music on the phone. The watch will then control it as expected.

    We apologize for the confusion.
  • What is a "currently active" media player? Is that a media player app running in the foreground? And what happens if you have apps running in the background that are also seen as media players by GCM (for instance Echolink)?

Active music player should be the most recent music/media player used on the phone.

Mine opens the Kindle app. Haven't use app on my phone in days but recently used Google play for music.

Called support and they didn't seem to able to figure out what is happening. First step was to see what app my phone had for Default Music player - I have Google Play Music set as the default music player (phone settings, not Garmin Connect settings). They had me sign out of the app, clear the cache and data on the phone, remove the device from Garmin connect then re-boot the phone - after re-pairing the device it still opened the Kindle app. While waiting for them to do more research I took it upon myself to uninstall the Kindle app and try again. IT OPENED GOOGLE PLAY MUSIC!!!!!! After re-installing Kindle it still opens Google Play Music - seems to have fixed the issue. Although after re-pairing the device I had to go back and turn off all the apps it set to send smart notifications (don't know why the default is now everything can make your wrist buzz but that's another issue).

Chuckiev516, thanks for the update. We continuing to investigate why the Amazon Kindle app was opening unexpectedly.
