Activity name for SPORT_SWIMMING gets overwritten with 'Swimming'

For every other activity, the name defined in ActivityRecording.createSession({}) is what shows in Garmin Connect, but when using SPORT_SWIMMING, it just shows 'Swimming', this is a shame because SPORT_SWIMMING also seems to be the only sport that can be used without having steps counted and added to the days step counter. Ideally, there would be a way to turn step counting off for any sport, in the very least SPORT_GENERIC should be this way so that it can be more customized.

  • Wonderful! Thank you very much! Either solution works for my purpose, but certainly the ability to turn of step tracking for a specific profile type is much cleaner.

  • What I'm hearing here is that this is less of an issue of the name with Swimming and more of an issue with not having a good option to record this activity type with. I've created a feature request to allow you the ability to turn off step tracking for a specific profile type in recording. Note that this is a request and there isn't a guarantee, but I'll pass it up the line. Thanks.

  • The whole point of the app I'm making is to count juggling throws which I am doing with the accelerometers so putting the watch in my pocket won't work. If I turn off activity tracking then I won't be able to keep a record of how much I/the user juggle each day, and every time the app is used, the user will need to go change the watch settings before and after. The issue is that there doesn't seem to be any option for an activity that doesn't record steps other than swimming(and possibly biking). Certainly this is just an oversight, and hopefully will be fixed soon, or maybe there is an option that I just have not found yet. Hopefully someone from Garmin will see this thread and resolve the issue. For now I am just going with the option to not use my watch for swimming, and so I will know that for me the activity labelled 'swimming' is actually juggling. The downside to this is that it is too tacky a solution for me to contribute the app to the community by putting it in the app store.

  • If you don't want steps during the time you're juggling, there are two options:

    1) put the watch in your pocket

    2) turn off activity tracking in the watch settings when you juggle.

  • I have the forerunner 945, I have tried about 6 or 7 activities that I wouldn't think would have step counting, like flying, rafting, training, but they all count steps for some reason. Swimming is the only one that doesn't that I have found, I would assume, like you said, that biking wouldn't as well, but I don't want to use that because I actually use my watch for biking so I don't want to mess up my stats. I am making an app that counts my throws while I juggle, it is unfortunate that I am forced to use the swimming activity to make it not count my throws as steps, but it looks like that is the case. I personally don't use my watch for swimming, but I wouldn't feel right every putting my app in the store since registering juggling as swimming is so tacky. I hope they figure out a fix for this problem.
