While this may look like a watch face, it's actually an application to to record a simple walk!

While running, the main screen looks very much like a watch face, with all the typical things, but behind it are three additional screens. (swipe or up/down to get to them)

  • additional data including Temperature (Tempe required), Pressure (on watches with a baro altimeter), Altitude, Pace, Speed, Calories, and Laps (A-Laps means you are using auto laps! - Default is Auto-Lap each 1 mi or km)
  • a chart of your walk, with dots to indicate your start and each lap mark, as well as current heading
  • "Back to Start" with the direction and distance, your current heading, and current lat/lon

When the app starts, it will waits for GPS, and you'll be told to press start when GPS has a lock. Pressing start again pauses the recording, and gives you the option to resume, save, or discard the recording.

A number of things can be changed by using "settings" in Garmin Connect Mobile or Garmin Express, including the bottom like on the main screen. It will show you daily steps, daily cals, daily distance, and on watches that support it, floors and intense minutes.

I want to keep this a simple alternative to Hike/Hike2, so please look at those if you want additional features, as they may already have the feature. (My sig is a link to my other apps)
  • Jim,

I do have to say that your latest improvements to both Simple Walk and Hike have been very good. As a long time hike user I do like the simplicity of Simple Walk to be great. During the day the first screen is very easy and simple. I did my first walk tonight with 0.16, I have to say I really like the new page for the elapsed time and distance in a larger font. It is much easier to see at night with my aging eyes. :D At night I find most of the data on the first screen hard to read in the dark, even with the back light on.

This give me an idea. Would it be possible to give us the option to choose the data shown in these two fields? I am thinking about the following bits of info would nice to be easier to see when walking at night. You may be able to think of a few more fields.

    • Elapsed Time
    • Distance
    • Activity Calories
    • Activity Step Total
    • Daily Step Total
    • Heart Rate

If memory space permits, and you could make the screen optional, then maybe you could have the option for two screens with the ability to show two fields in larger font. I have a FR230, so I know memory is at a premium compared to newer watches.

Regardless of what you decide to do with this suggestion, Simple Walk has become my primary app on my watch. Thanks for offering your time to write the app and share it with all of us.

Great idea and I agree with your comments 100%
  • Version 0.17

    Charges are:

    -support for the vivoactive
    -change in data screens:
In 0.16a, I added two "large data fields on one screen, with 10 different choices for what's shown in each field. I added 6 more choices - Average Pace, Average Speed, Altitude,Temperature, Barometer, and Lap Count. *

This allowed me to get rid of the old "data summary" screen. To replace it, I added two more screens with large data fields. So now, out of the 16 possible items, 6 can be displayed (on the 3 screens). The defaults I picked are things available on all devices:

screen 1 - Elapsed Time and Distance
screen 2 - Pace and Speed
screen 3 - Altitude and Laps

They can be changed using "settings" from Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    * not all data is available on all devices/configurations. If the data isn't available, "--" will be shown instead of a value. Pace and Avg Pace/Avg Speed won't have data until you start moving, and Temperature may take a minute or so to connect with the Tempe.

Thanks. Will try it out and get abck to you.
  • Jim,

version 0.17 rocks. It works really well and is easy to see. I was even able to reconfigure one of the screens mid activity through the GCM app.

thanks for incorporating and expanding the idea.
  • yes, you can change what's in the large field while you are using the app. You can also change other things like the colors, what's on the bottom line of the main page, and even auto-lap on/off/distance.
  • version 0.18

The only real change in 0.18 is support for the Fenix 5x, Fenix 5, and Fenix 5s. The update to Simple Walk means that all my apps are ready for the new devices when they begin shipping!

Also, there's now a facebook page where you can aks bout the apps, post your experience, post a picture from your walk or hike etc!

  • Suggestions

    Hi Jim

I really love this app, it is the perfect choice for those who have to walk by an injure instead of run like usually. I find this app very usefull and looks like the run app that i used to use when ran.

I would like to suggest one or two things that i miss. First is to add the option "none" for the data fields that the screens can show, or the possibility of disable one or more of these screens. Second is to show the pace of the last lap in the screen when an autolap is done. I have seen that in these screen there are three data fields, distance and lap distance twice..... it could be great that one of them would be last lap pace.

Thanks a lot for your work..... it is Great!!!!!

    Regards.
  • I'll think about either turning off a field, or maybe 1 or 2 of the pages.

With the distances, you should see the total distance, and last lap distance, and last lap would always be the same with auto laps. I'll also look at having avg pace.
  • ANT VivoActive HR

    Jim,

Recently purchased the Vivoactive HR as I could not wait for Samsung to trully have a "waterproof" sport watch/tracker.

I have had the Vivoactive about a month and came across your app as I like to know my pace and the default app does not give you that info. I also use the Vivoactive with my Samsung S7 and Endomomdo, as Endomondo will notifiy me of my Pace, Distance, HR ect.. I forgot my Waist HR monitor one day on a bike ride and noticed the the Vivoactive HR transmitted my HR to Endomondo. Then I tried it with the basic Walking app and again it transmitted my HR.

I noticed that your app states that it uses ANT+, however, I cannot get the Vivoactive to transmit my HR when I use your app. Is this enabled on the vivoactive as I noticed this started as a Fenix app.

    Great app!

    Wesley
  • Actually the very initial app that became Hike/Hike2/Simple Walk, started as a vivoactive app (not the va-hr, the original one!)

For HR, on the va-hr, in settings for the Wrist HR, there are settings under sensors on the watch. You can have a simple broadcast that does that all the time (the watch can do nothing else), or a setting that's to broadcasts while recording an activity. I know the FW transmission of HR works with Simple Walk. Right now I'm running Simple Walk on the vahr and transmitting the HR to Simple Walk on a forerunner 230 for example (I've transmitted HR to an Edge in the past too)

The ANT+ permission is needed if you use a HRM band or a Tempe, and I don't do any transmitting myself.
