heart rate values totally wrong after update 18.22

did a run today with my forerunner 955 (update version 18.22 from today):

first km slow: pace 6:04 min/km, av. heart rate 151

then 5 km fast with pace 4:51 min/km; av. heart rate 133 ?? (my common hear rate at that pace should be 180-190)
a sudden drop of the heart rate appeared approximately at the change of pace

  • Just to add another data point. Almost 12 minutes into a ride on my trainer my HR is 136 reading from the strap. The Forerunner reading from the wrist is 74. This is unfortunately typical. Several minutes later it got to 90 and eventually 130. It should simply read what it is. A little smoothing over several seconds seems reasonable. Many minutes can only be hiding defective hardware design. Poor software choices would have been resolved long ago.

  • Here a comparison of the OHR of the FR955 in blue and the Venu 3S in red.

The difference in HR during the first part of the training is clearly visible. I've this issue every run.

Garmin has confirmed this is indeed an issue and they can reproduce it. However, no forecast when this will be solved...

  • A few updates later and it seems that, reading here, the problem is still in the too hard basket sadly. Garmin should start bundling this watch with a (free!) HRM Pro if the watch alone is unable to do what it says on the packaging. A product that doesn't track what is essentially a core metric for running + training predictions, etc. is pretty unacceptable..Then everyone can enjoy that non-machine-washable, non-replaceable and soon-to-be-very-stinky HRM Pro chest strap too Stuck out tongue closed eyes

It's a shame that the flagship running watch is where it is with this major bug. Gotta be shaking some people's brand loyalty by now...

  • Oh, absolutely. Because of the ecosystem all my devices are garmin but that was the last time I bought Garmin product.

A few weeks ago I decided to update the maps on my Edge 840 via USB cable. The update started and then I had to choose whether I want to use Central Europe maps or Western one. There was no way I can use both after the update, the device gives a failure code „there is not enough space for more than one map“. But I bought this head unit because of the full Europe coverage! I live on the German-French border and I ride in Gernany and in FranceFace palm♂️ this is so ridiculous, it’s not even funny. Every update garmin rolls out brings some functionality down or disables it. I have never experienced something like that before when a brand I decided to trust does everything to chase me off as a customer.

As for my FR955 Solar has now not only broken HR readings but also vibrates only twice on incoming calls. Another one basic function of the watch is now purposely dumbed down. At this rate my once 500-ish Euro Smart Watch has the functionality of a much cheaper product.

So yeah, garmin lost me and my fiancé, who also uses their products. Our next devices won’t be garmin.

  • Parkrun this morning, forgot my chest strap. Started off fairly ok, HR reflected how I felt, then for 2 mins it stuck at 168 BPM (no deviation) then dropped to the 130/140's BPM which in no way reflected my effort, was completely goosed at the end, but watch reckoned I was in zone 1

  • is there any update on this? Last post from Garmin was a month ago, this issue is pretty fundamental to the main purpose of the watch, I understand that work is happening in the background but getting some regular updates on what is happening might help reduce the frustration some of us are feeling regarding it.

  • I apologize for the delayed response, but I still do not have an official update at this time. We are still tracking the amount of impacts that this report has received and are continuing to work on improvements!

  • @Garmin-Sierra "tracking the amount of impacts" and "working on improvements" is not very reassuring.

This is a long standing issue affecting multiple models and from what you say Garmin is not working on fix and it may be decided that this is a non-issue and move on. Garmin has all the information about what update triggered this fiasco but simply ignores it.

If Garmin only looks at the percentage of people reporting the issues over the total number of active devices this will probably never get fixed.

Highly disappointed by Garmin reaction on this core issue. Will think twice before buying another device from you.

  • Sadly this isn't just an issue that impacts activity. The overnight HRV measurements aren't accurate either - http://www.muscleoxygentraining.com/2024/09/garmin-resting-hrv-my-experience.html

In my experience they tend to correlate with a morning measurement I take via hrv4training, so I'd imagine they're directionally accurate. I've lost faith in the data my watch is giving me so moved to the Apple Watch 2, which does seem reliable per quantified scientists tests on YouTube.
