heart rate values totally wrong after update 18.22

did a run today with my forerunner 955 (update version 18.22 from today):

first km slow: pace 6:04 min/km, av. heart rate 151

then 5 km fast with pace 4:51 min/km; av. heart rate 133 ?? (my common hear rate at that pace should be 180-190)
a sudden drop of the heart rate appeared approximately at the change of pace

  • Buy any chest strap. Problem solved.

Both Polar and Suunto are struggling way more with getting HR right (OHR). Perhaps the only run-focused company that comes close to Garmin is Coros.

  • Reading the above posters though even with chest strap there are issues - I got the return slip so might go with Coros.

  • In short, across the spectrum of all brands, it's always about some sort of compromise. There is no ideal brand.

  • You think is better with other watch brands? Look here https://support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040257191-Why-is-my-heart-rate-data-inaccurate as an example.

everone needs to know that at present measuring the HR on top of the wrist cannot get same results as on chest

  • While I agree with you, the fact that metrics such as training readiness, VO2, Endurance scores etc are based somewhat on HR during activities, they really need to be as accurate as possible. I personally wear a chest strap for faster interval activities, but don't wear them during races. Seeing 204BPM for 90+secs at 55 and 195 at a previous race, would normally cause me to slow down, but on both occasions I felt nowhere near max. During the race where I 'hit' 195, the first few K my HR was in the 130's, I didn't speed up as again this was wrong, only to see it jump nearly 30 beats in secs to the correct level and then go on and hit 195 later. I personally run to PRE rather than HR, but not trusting your watches HR readings is cause for concern.

  • One thing is accuracy, another one is faulty/erratic HR readings with jumps etc. Nobody cares about 5% accuracy difference to a chest strap.

  • If you're saying do a warm up, then if I'm in the middle of my run,  and the heartrate on the watch drops randomly,  then  I should stop my current workout, save it and start a new one that this would fix the heart rate issue, and it should then resume normally? and pick up the correct rate.

The warm up thing would make sense, if it was an issue from the start, but more often than not, its at somepoint during the actvity, when the OHR, has been acceptably accurate, that it then either climbs and locks high, or drops off completely, no change of tightness on the wrist, and no issues with not be warmed up.

Should just stopping, and then restarting the activity have the same effect?

  • to you and to others who have not read the entire topic.

THE PROBLEM ALSO AFFECTS USERS WHO USE CHEST STRAPS

  • (There is no need for capital letters)

That is not how I read it. However, there seem to be some who have slightly misunderstood how chest straps functions e.g sends data to either a watch, phone etc.

  • That's not how I've seen it, although can't say my chest strap is always reliable, that seemed to climb and latch on to 207bpm the other day.. but that's an issue for a seperate thread.
