heart rate values totally wrong after update 18.22

did a run today with my forerunner 955 (update version 18.22 from today):

first km slow: pace 6:04 min/km, av. heart rate 151

then 5 km fast with pace 4:51 min/km; av. heart rate 133 ?? (my common hear rate at that pace should be 180-190)
a sudden drop of the heart rate appeared approximately at the change of pace

  • At this point I am not updating my device anymore before I read this forum. Thanks for pointing out this problem with this version. Will wait for a few months ...

It is sad that users have to quality-check their software by themselves

  • They do have a beta program but now the reason for it becomes unclear. Some of the issues found and raised by users during beta are acknowledged but not solved and a new FW is pushed out anyway. Why would anyone would do that is beyond me.

The solution offered by for complaining users is to follow some insulting nonsense wearing advice. If that won't work (and why would) the users should look for help with Garmin Product Support (probably get the same nonsense advice and eventually watch replacement). To me it sounds like they given up on this issue and the "problematic" users.

  • Ok so using an ant+ app means I can and have logged both OHR and Heart Rate from chest strap. I've found a way to replace the HR data in the fit file with that from the strap. Anyone know how to update / refresh all the other metrics based on this new correct heart rate, so I can re-upload to Garmin? Thanks

  • I wrote to the Garmin product support and they gave me another nonsense advice by giving me the process to reboot (reset) the watch. They indicated me how to do a ctrl + alt + suppr , which never be a solution and, clearly is an admission of a lack of serenity about their own product.

  • Agree it is not worth risking the accuracy of the OHR for the other items that were included in this update since it determines so much else on the watch.  I am still on 17.26 and like you I have turned off automatic updates in the settings on the 955 and will review the next update here before turning updates back on.

  • I also did the same and they asked me to send Garmin folder via Garmin express and also identify which exercises were wrong etc...I feel like we are going in rounds here and there is a disconnect what Sierra is advising here vs what support is asking...Having left the Apple Watch behind I am now questioning whether it was a wise decision at all Disappointed...I wish I can just get a refund rather than having all this headache to deal with

  • I also contacted support as Sierra advised. On the other hand, I see that everyone gets completely different "help" from them. They asked me to send links to activities where the error occurred. Apart from the fact that they were very nice I didn't learn anything, unfortunately.

The actions of support indicate that I don't have a single path of troubleshooting by garmin here. Rather, they are "macing" the issue. And the problem of horror does not seem to be taken seriously by them.

Unfortunately I don’t think that’s possible. The training metrics you’re referring are calculated on the watch, and won’t be updated even if you delete the original activity on the watch and replace it with the edited activity.

You’ll need to connect to the external HR strap natively (which ofc means OHR won’t be recorded), as opposed to using an app to record both the optical HR and external HR as you described.

Unfortunately same happens when contacting Garmin in Germany except they are not even nice.

Even after long and thorough conversation with visialization etc. they repeat all the same text, such as snugger fit, warm up etc etc, and tell you your watch is working as intended but the HR data is WAY OFF and not just like 5% off.

This is how to lose customers 101, Garmin.

  • Here’s my contribution to the thread. 955 with 18.23 (red line is Polar H10, grey graph is OHR):

    - Interval workout

    - Steady state run (the HR increase near the end corresponds with picking up the pace to end the run)

(the HR dips are due to stopping the activity at red lights)

It’s as if the new optical HR algorithm can’t cope with rapid changes in HR, at least past a certain point in the activity. I’ve run with mostly optical HR for years, and I’ve never seen an interval workout which looks as bad as the first example above until now.
