Not updating most recent version automatically

Hi there

Just got a garnin forerunner 255. The software version is on 13.2 and stares it is fully updated- on both connect app and garmin express. I cannot download any apps as I believe version 15.19 is most uptodate version.

The sites state it should update automatically but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Can ye advise?

  • Great tip, thank you so much! This is mostly what I'm waiting for, together with the ability to change the background color of the watchface (which weirdly vanished with 13.23)

  • Another case that may work is for you to search for the application instead of trying to install it on the Connect IQ home screen.

  • It's getting ridiculous. I've been stuck with VERY buggy firmware for a week now, and no official announcement from Garmin, nor any timelines.

Does anyone have any idea how long this is going to go on?

I've already realized that buying a new Garmin watch that I didn't really need was a mistake. Now I'm considering getting rid of it.

I have Garmin forerunner 955 Solar, firmware version 9.11 - obviously old stock.

BTW, why do we discuss it in the FR255 thread? I guess the problem is the same, but it's a FR955 forum.

    UPDATE:

I have just received a response from Garmin support:

The update issue is a known issue we are working as hard as possible to resolve.
I have added your information to the case and you should get an email when it is fixed.

  • Updated.

Cool, there was probably a map key in the RemoteSW folder(

    "Cannot unlock maps"

    1. This message appeared after I deleted the folder and tried to trigger an update. It didn't help with the update, but invalidated maps.
    2. I removed all the map files from the watch - no message anymore.
    3. Re-downloaded maps - no message. SUCCESS!

STILL on software version 9.11 though.

... not sure why my post was downvoted by someone.

  • Now I get a message "Cannot unlock maps"

, latest on that issue, which is impacting across newer Forerunner/fenix/epix watches for some customers.

    Maps cannot unlock message

I am sorry there is an issue after your map update.

    - Do you remember what map(s) Garmin Express gave you to update?

    - Are you using a PC or a Mac computer to update through?

    - Did Garmin Express say the update showing 100% completed when you unplugged from your computer?

    - How soon after the map update completed did you unplug your watch from your computer?

Working with another customer but with another generation watch, we deleted the TopoActive map and reinstalled it and the issue resolved. I am trying to figure out if the issue is in a specific region or not. The first report was central Europe.

  • Just bought a brand new FR955 Solar directly from Garmin Webshop few days ago. After unpacking I connected the watch to Garmin Express in order to install my favorite data fields and apps. But Garmin IQ Store refused to install any app telling me my FR955 software was outdated and needs to be updated. However, Garmin Connect and Garmin Express both told me there was no Software available for my device (installed version was 13.23). From this forum I learned that latest non-beta currently should be 15.19.

So I contacted support via chat yesterday but they had no solution and also it seems they didn't know anything about this issue (at least they didn't say a word about it). The support just requested to receive several log files from the device in order to look into the matter. Log files from a brand new device which was just unpacked and switched on (with absolutely no settings changed up to that moment)? What the ... ?!

As the watch was not working as it should (with no solution available from the support) I assumed I received a lemon and just returned the 'defective' FR955 for a refund. After finding this discussion in the forum just now and reading all the posts here it seems the return for a refund wasn't necessary at all because it was not the fault of the watch. Furthermore I guess the next FR955 that I would order will suffer from the same issue, at least for the moment. Maybe it would be a good idea to just stick to my old Forerunner and to not spend any money on a new 'premium' Forerunner watch with such ridiculous issues and support staff not knowing (or not speaking) about them.

  • Give it a couple of weeks and Garmin should have fixed it.

Because the upgrade mechanism is incremental (just sending the differences between two versions, not the whole firmware) it's entirely possible someone's mistakenly deleted one or more of the upgrade step files, forgetting about unsold stock sat in original boxes with older firmwares.

  • Are you sure that Garmin uses the incremental firmware update strategy for watches? As far as I know it is not used often and only for IoT devices with very strict power and network constraints.

I would really appreciate if you could point me to a document that explains this.

  • Are you sure that Garmin uses the incremental firmware update strategy for FR 955? If that were true, then I couldn't upgrade my watch from beta 14.12 directly to non beta 15.19 when it still worked.

  • We are. Go to System -> About, there's data page about "Delta updates". Not sure is there any documentation about this as it's not something end user should worry about (if it works:).
