Battery Drain

Previous questions directed me to a locked thread.

My 255 was at 100%. I went to an event for 1:30.  When I got home I was at 82%. It kept dropping rapidly.   I restarted the watch which seemed to get it out of its funk, but what if it had been during a race? I got the Garmin after my Apple did this during a couple of races.

Is there a fix?

  • I have exactly the same observation on my 255

  • I'm wondering, do you have the watch to phone connection enabled overnight when this sort of drop happened?

And for those who have experienced this effect after customizing via Connect IQ, does it make any difference to just toggle the phone connection via the watch's controls menu?  I.e. leaving it off should stop whatever persistent sync action is happening, but also does turning it off and on reset it to a sane state without having to reset the whole watch?

  • april 3: i'm on public 14.20 now with FR255 lost 40% overnight and another 7% over the last 1h.  Looks like the beta bug made it to public availability :-(  I quit the beta program 3 months ago as the betas where too buggy...

  • I'm about 11.5 days into a battery miser experiment on my FR255 with firmware 14.20.  I am at 50% battery.

It's been a pretty steady usage of 3-5% per 24 hrs depending on which features I used. I disabled even wrist HR for the first two days and avoided GPS for the first 9, then did a couple hours of UltraTrac mode.

I've synced with GCM Android every 1-2 days but immediately disable the phone connection after GCM shows the green circle for the sync status.

  • tx for the tip, i have now disconnected watch from phone, let's see. The action of disconnecting alone 'cost" me 3% of battery xD at this rate, my watch will die before i'm back at my charging cable anyways...

  • Sounds like there is some stuck process running in your watch. I guess you have tested restarting it?

  • thx, looking promising, 45min after reboot still on same % , fingers crossed, in any case a tip to remember

  • I just got to this thread after looking for an answer for my FR 255. Battery life has not been a problem since this morning after I created a workout and sent it, using GConnect, to my watch. Then, after 2 hours, 15% of battery life was gone. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with a consistent/initerrupted bluetooth connection with my phone that caused that. So, now I reseted the watch and, like the last comment, I'm crossing my fingers.

Didn't Garmin fixed that yet? Is there anything that might fix it to come?

  • Amazing results. I'm sorry to ask you, but how many GPS activities did you do on those days? For how long?

  • As I mentioned in the post, I avoided GPS for the first 9 days. I recorded 1 hour activities on most days but without GPS, so it just recorded pedometer pace info and heartrate on the days after I reenabled the wrist HR sensor.

Then I started doing 1-hour GPS UltraTrac activities in the next few days. This hardly seemed to change battery usage.  Maybe an extra 1% drop for those days. Multiple 24 hour periods shifted from a mix of 3-4% drops and became mostly 4% drops with the UltraTrac activities.

The tracks were a bit jagged, as expected, but not too bad since I was walking around 3.4 MPH and not covering too much distance between samples.

Yesterday I tried "GPS only" mode and lost at least 4% in that 1 hour activity based on the indicated battery level immediately before and after. For comparable 24 hour periods, it jumped from 4%/day to 9%/day, but I also did several phone syncs, trying but failing to resolve the "ephemeris missing" status I asked about in a separate thread.
