Heart rate measurements paused while notifications shown

When recording activities with my Forerunner 245 Music together with a Wahoo Tickr heart rate chest strap I've recently noticed issues with recorded heart rate measurements. At a first glance it looked like intermittent drops but after checking further there seems to be a pattern to it.

From what I can tell pulse recording is paused whenever a notification is shown on the watch. On a normal run I get periodic pulse dropout on every km notification.
I tried following a route and had plenty of off track notifications in the beginning of the recording. That recording looks much worse and strengthens that it's related to notifications shown.
Anyone else noticed similar issues?
I'm currently on v5.20 with ANT/BLE/BT V6.0.6 but noticed same problem on the version I had before latest software update too.
  • Interesting.  Did you happen to notice if this happens using a different strap or the oHRM?  All those gaps are notifications you received in an hour and 45 min span?

I've only tried with this strap so don't know if same problem is seen with different ones.

Yes that second picture is from a long run where I choose to follow a course via: Run->Options->Courses->...->Do course.

I received plenty of route notifications until I after about 1h choose to go completely off track and the watch stopped guiding me. This pattern of notifications received  is quite visible in the recorded heart rate graph. So yes I believe all these gaps are due to notifications shown.

Updated to v5.50 with ANT/BLE/BT v6.11and problem still exists. I've found a similar report on Garmin German forum:

    forums.garmin.com/.../verbindungsabbruch-hrm-run

    And this one:

    forums.garmin.com/.../unstable-connection-with-hrm-run

Appears also related to notifications and not with same hrm strap I use so likely a more generic problem.

  • I’ve had the exact same issue. Notifications seem to break connection with my hr strap. I had a polar h7, which works perfectly well with my garmin instinct..

Reported it to garmin, and they requested me to send them my watch. It’s on its way back now. Curious to see if they’ve been able to fix it..

  • Hello, Were they able to fix it? I'm having the same problem. HR drops out every time I get a notification.

  • Hi! Not really. The new watch had the exact same problem using the Polar H7 belt with bluetooth. But, they've sent me a new chest strap (HRM-Tri) which uses ANT+. This one actually works much better. I think i have had one dropout sine I received it, so the problem seems like its in the bluetooth connection.
