Turn-by-Turn Navigation missing - Bug or simply not available?

Hello everyone,

The Venu 4 product page advertises the following:

COURSES WITH TURN-BY-TURN DIRECTIONS

Create or find existing courses in the Garmin Connect smart-device app, or sync from your favorite third-party platforms and get turn-by-turn directions.

But when I create a route and let it navigate me, I don't get any turn-by-turn directions. Only the distance to the destination is shown at the bottom of the display.

Test videos on YouTube have also criticized the lack of turn-by-turn directions, even though they should be available according to the advertising.

Is this false advertising or a bug in the watch?

Do other owners have the same problem?

Many thanks and best regards,
Chris

  • Install Google Maps on the watch, then start directions in Google Maps on your phone. The turn-by-turn directions will appear on your watch.

  • Thank you for pointing out Google Maps.

But on the one hand, Google Maps is not yet available for the watch, and on the other hand, it only works with an Android phone.

And that's not what the watch is advertised for. There should be turn-by-turn directions for routes from Garmin Connect.

Maybe  say something about this and help.

    thank you!

  • Same here, I've checked all my settings and have updated the software etc but get exactly the same as you, no turn by turn guidance Rolling eyes

  • You can get turn-by-turn directions for courses you create in Connect. Is that what you're referring to? You can do that now, I just tried it.

I have Google Maps installed on my Venu 4, it's in the Connect IQ store.

  • Essentially, the idea is that you can create routes in the Connect app and send them to the Venu 4. This means that turn-by-turn directions are displayed when navigating. This is known as breadcrumb navigation, but with turn-by-turn directions.
(Similar to the Forerunner 265, for example)

And it is precisely this feature that is advertised on the Venu 4 product page, but it doesn't work.

  • When you say it doesn't work, what specifically isn't working? I used it just a few minutes ago as a test. It told me when I was off course, and when I was back on course. I wouldn't call them turn-by-turn directions like you'd get with Google Maps, but neither does Garmin.

There was a course, along with my route, the whole way, showing where I was in relation to the course

  • I've attached a screenshot from a YouTube video of a Forerunner 265:

In addition to the actual route, you can see the "turn-by-turn directions" at the bottom of the display.
In this case, turn right in 20 meters.

And if you look at the features on the Venu 4 product page, it says "COURSES WITH TURN-BY-TURN DIRECTIONS."

(See my initial post with the screenshot of the Venu 4 specs).

So when I start a route on my Venu 4 as you described, it looks similar to the picture of the Forerunner, BUT instead of the turn-by-turn directions at the bottom of the display, it only shows how many meters/kilometers it is to the destination.

And I don't think that should be the case if turn-by-turn navigation is advertised, right?

I hope I've explained what I mean clearly and that someone from the Garmin team will comment on this.

  • Yes, I see now. Distance to the next turn would be more useful than distance to the destination. I wouldn't go so far as to say it doesn't work, but that change would be good. I submitted it to the Garmin ideas web page.

  • As the feature currently stands, you don't have Garmin routes with turn-by-turn directions (as the Forerunner 265 has).

You only have a displayed route and your current location.

In other words, the advertised feature doesn't work, right?!

Or does “...get turn-by-turn directions.” in this advertising text "Create or find existing courses in the Garmin Connect smart-device app, or sync from your favorite third-party platforms and get turn-by-turn directions." refer only to “third-party apps” and NOT to Garmin routes from Connect?

    Clarification would be helpful.

  • I disagree, in my opinion it does work. I still see each turn when I look at the route. It doesn't notify me of each turn, but it shows me each turn. The product page doesn't state how it's supposed to work.

Regardless, you don't have to convince me, you have to convince Garmin. Have you sent in a request to change it? I did. Maybe call Garmin support too. I agree it could be better.
