S2 Body Fat not accurate

  • Consent to be added to an internal case - yes, I consent
  • Consent to access your Garmin Connect account (if needed) -  yes, I consent
  • What device/test are you comparing your Index readings to - Tanita Inner Ccan
  • What does your Index S2 display vs what does your reference device display -  S2 Fat = 17.1 Tanita =10.6
  • What is your activity class set to, and is this appropriate for your activity level - 8 - Yes
  • Change it again to your real age after weighing in not go affect any other parameter. That's what I do each day.

  • Going to try changing one variable at a time, changed activity from 8 to 10, going on a run now, will see what we get after.

  • Ok, so: Using the navy tape measure system: 11.6% bf; old scale, 15 euro from LIDL 11.3% bf; S2 @ 10 activity level, 12.8%; s2 at 10 activity level minus 20 years my age, 10.3%; S2 at 10 activity level minus 10 years my age, 11.4% bf. So. So....not the worst. I'm 38, I tell it I'm 28, and it's close enough to my other controls to merit my not returning the scale. But I wouldn't have bought it, that's for sure, had I known about all these problems. That being said, I think with these two other controls I've used here, my answer for how to tweak it is pretty good.

tl;dr - for a late 30's early 40's very active male, set scale to 10 activity level and minus 10 years your age to get an accurate reading.

  • That's it. I'm 50, triathlete not pro, activity level 10, and if I change my age to 17, I get similar BF than my Tanita and the professional scale at Gym.

So as we have been discussing here during more than 1 year and a half, it's an algorithm issue but it seems imposible to fix by Garmin

  • At least I know it's not just me. Yesterday I was 24.5% and today 17.2%, according to the Garmin Index S2. When I first stood on the scale, I was shocked to see 24.5% in the first place. I'm more in the 15% range. If I'm understanding correctly, I need to change my age from 46 to 18?

  • That's the only way to get more or less accurate values.Every Morning Rolling eyes I change my age to 17 on GCM, I weigh in, and then I change again the age to my real age..

  • If Garmin is unable to read biometrics, they should not make such claims. It seems like the scale is faking it, with an algorithm, probably like 99% of other scales out there. Only here, we have a bigger audience to shine a spotlight on it.

  • Is it necessary to change your age back to your real age? What's the downside of just leaving it as the fake age?

  • Yeah, I believe no amount of firmware updates can solve these issues because I'm pretty sure the scale can't actually measure BF via impedance and is just using BMI with some qualifying parameters to fudge things according to activity level.

It's nonsense people are having to set their age back 10 years to get the algorithm to spit out something believable, I'm sorry to say but I think this scale is never going to be accurate for BF and only a hardware update can resolve it i.e. the S3 when it comes out.  Sorry to everyone who's stuck with this turd, I'm one of the lucky ones who shipped it straight back to Garmin as soon as I saw the nonsense numbers it was giving me.

  • If you don't change your age back, other parameters are affected. Vo2max, recovery time, ....

The only way I've found not to affect anything except BF is the one I've explained above.
