S2 Body Fat not accurate

  • Consent to be added to an internal case - yes, I consent
  • Consent to access your Garmin Connect account (if needed) -  yes, I consent
  • What device/test are you comparing your Index readings to - Tanita Inner Ccan
  • What does your Index S2 display vs what does your reference device display -  S2 Fat = 17.1 Tanita =10.6
  • What is your activity class set to, and is this appropriate for your activity level - 8 - Yes
  • Please let me know what the next steps are or if I simply need to exchange the scale for product that works?

  • I returned the scale and got a replacement through Garmin. The new scale also DOES NOT WORK!

  • I have just started with the Index S2 and compared the first measurements with my older Tanita Innerscan bc1000.

my muscle mass has halved from avg 63 to 31 kgs. As a result my body fat avg has gone from 15% to 25%.

I am seemingly on another Garmin product rollercoaster only this time I am going to get off early and just return the product.

  • I'm having the same issue - the S2 is reading consistently 7-9% higher than my Tanita and two different approaches to caliper measurements. Calipers and Tanita are within 2% of each other consistently. The scale seems to be accurate for my wife however.

  • It's just so difficult to believe one from the other. If these scales were £40 off Amazon I would be less prescriptive over the results. But  for £130 I would expect some consistency and accuracy to the results. Two weeks left on trial before they go back to Wiggle.

  • Has there been any update on this inaccuracy issues? Can you tweak the setting to obtain a more accurate reading?

  • Has there been any updates on this inaccuracy issue? Can you tweak settings to obtain a more realistic %?

  • I have got more realistic results (near Tanita ones) changing every time I use it my age to 18 years. I change it again to my real age after the measurement not to interfere with VO2 and the rest of the metrics.

  • Thanks for the tip, I will try that.

  • I took delivery of my Index S2 scale last week and have had problems with the scales showing inaccurate readings compared with my Tanita BC-1000 scales. The Tanita scales have been calibrated to be within 2>4% of formal medical body fat readings etc, which seems to mirror other experiences form users in these forums, so I know the Index S2 is way off. It seems to approximately double the Body Fat readings which then pushes off many of the other readings rendering the Index S2 somewhat useless.

Following some investigation, the issue I have tracked to the fact that there is no ‘Lifetime Athlete’ setting available in the Index S2 user settings. This is available through the Garmin Edge 800 / 810 User Profile settings that sync's my Tanita BC-1000 readings.

If I switch ‘Lifetime Athlete’ off on the Garmin Edge device(s) the Tanita Body Fat readings get closer to the Index S2, although it is still off by approx 4>6% so somewhat academic as the Tanita still gives greater accuracy.

So the question I have for Garmin is why is there no ‘Lifetime Athlete’ setting in the Index S2 user profile settings?  On the evidence working with my Tanita through the Garmin Edge 800/810 this would possibly make the Index S2 device useful with a better degree of accuracy, albeit still @4>6% off the Tanita which still gives greater accuracy.

For now this is an Index S2 heading back to Garmin until this gets sort out.
