Garmin Edge 840 does not connect to Garmin Express

I just received the device today. It synced with the Garmin Connect on my iPhone automatically and asked for software upgrade. Then I wanted to connect it with Garmin Express on my mac, but it won't find the device. I use the latest Garmin Express 7.24.0.0 and Software version 24.55 on the Garmin 840. I have other Garmin Devices connected to this machine OK, i.e. - Edge 830, Forerunner 920XT, Varia Bike Radar, and Garmin nuvi. All devices work OK via USB. Any idea what can be wrong with the 840?

  • Are you a Mac or PC? If you are on a Mac you need to make sure that no MTP type software like OpenMTP or Android File Transfer running,  as only program at a time can access an MTP device on Mac. These programs will stop Garmin Express from finding the device.

  • Same issue with same versions of express and garmin edge

  • How to connect the Edge to a Mac PC. (after new release 24.25)
    1- Garmin edge off
2- Connect the USB cable to the PC, HOLDING the LAP button.
3- WAIT at least 20 - 30 seconds until USB MTP MODE appears en Garmin screen

I have managed to do it this way. And if you want to access the Garmin memory you
will have to use an application to connect MTP devices (openmtp is valid)
  • Yes, this actually does work. When you connect with the lap button pressed, it connects in the USB MTP mode. Without this it connects in some other mode, but I cannot understand - what is it. It is not visible in the finder anyway.

  • Garmin has decided to do a "boycott" of Apple users. They now use the MTP protocol for file transfers, with this protocol you cannot directly see the information in the finder, you must use an intermediate application (For example OpenMTP). However, when you have the Garmin connected to your Mac in MTP mode you can use Garmin Express.

You should keep in mind that two applications that open the same device on your Mac will not be possible. You can use Garmin express or application to see the memory of your Garmin as you previously did with the finder, but not a same time

  • Hello

I'm a mac OS user in version 15.1.1 (SEQUOIA) and since the last update (last week) of my edge 840 in 25.24, I no longer had the view in the finder of the GPS using the wired connection usb-c. (cable test done too ;) )
I have made an opening to the support, and the answer is :
you have to use ‘Android File Transfer’ to be able to manipulate your gpx or img files.
It seems that either Garmin chooses an emabarked os like android (to see with the developers) or Apple, the last mac OS maj reduced this access.
In any case, the solution is ‘Android File Transfer’.
    Enjoy your bike ride !

  • Hi everyone,

i just updatet to 25.24. Now it is extremely difficult to connect the 840 to Express, the LAP-button hack does not work: The USB MTP mode is active, but no connection to Express. When the 840 is luckily connected there are map updates shown available, but the download fails every time i try. Express is version 7.18.00 shown as current version.

Is it possible to attach an attachment to this posting? I did not find a possibility.

Thank you for your answers in advance.

  • You can download maps via the map manager in the system maps menu. But you need a Wi-Fi connection for this. I think the Garmin 840 uses some outdated Wi-Fi protocol because I was not able to connect it to my WEP3 based access point. I have some other access point that uses WEP2 protocol, so I was able to update the maps via the older device. Also you need to turn off inactivity timeout in your current activity settings. Otherwise the device will keep turning off after a few minutes, while the maps update takes hours.

  • Hi Alex, yes that works via map manager, thank you for the hint.
But after 1% it stopped because the timer startet ... after some searching i stopped the auto timer starting, now the download is "running".

The problem to connect to Express still exists ... updated Express to 7.24.0.0, but no change. I'm loking forward that it will work again in the future, who knows.
What's about the other guys reporting this, in this thread? Did you get it to work?
