Auto brightness too dark?

I just opened my new Edge 840 (NON-SOLAR) and updated to the newest firmware. I am comparing side by side on my desk with my Edge 530. The auto brightness seems quite a bit darker on the 840 compared to the 530, with both in Auto mode.

Curious if anyone else is seeing the same thing. Thanks

  • Isn't this is exactly what it's supposed to do.

The more light there is shining on it, the more light the backlight should give. When it's dark you don't need as much backlight to read it, or you would be blinded by the brightness of the display.

So you don't confirm. Read the post again :)  The 830 is correct, it's the 840 that does the wrong thing. So, read everything twice before making a video, lol.

  • Correct, it was a typo from my end :) Its the 840 which is incorrect. I edited my previous post. Last weekend we hade a ride where we started in the night and the 840 of my wife was completely useless.

  • I only have a 530, but I'm following this as I would consider an 840 once it seems issues like this are corrected.

One complaint I have with the 530 is that although the Auto Brightness works pretty good, there are times that it would be nice to keep it on Auto, but bias it brighter than it does on its own.  This is where the slider comes into play, I expect that should be a gain adjustment, i.e., you are still in Auto Bright mode, but you should be able to bias it brighter or dimmer.  Can someone with an 840 confirm this?  Can you keep it in Auto Bright, but bias it to be brighter overall via the slider?

(On edit:  I am describing the same feature as an iPhone has, it is Auto Bright, but you can still move the slider to bias it one way or the other.)

  • Check my post on page 7. my 830 when set to auto-bright does not allow the slider to move manually (you have a print there to see), whereas the 840 in auto-brightness does allow the slider to move manually.

Despite this 840 brightness potential issue, which i also reported in my post, i did not regret the move from 830 to 840

    • Set minimum backlight level to retain screen visibility after backlight timeout expires.

One of the fixes in FW24.18. I can confirm it does nothing to auto brightness dim issue.

  • I bought an Edge 540 a few weeks ago and noticed this issue. It's unbelievable that this long-standing problem hasn't been solved yet. Is it possible to return it for warranty?

  • I have major issues looking at the display of my 840 during the day time when the sun is shining but the display itself is covered by shadows. It's way too dark.

  • I wrote to garmin support. They said it wasn't a fault. I returned it to the seller under warranty and the egde 840 was replaced with a new one. The new one still has the same problem with the backlight. Over a year ago someone from the official Garmin account wrote that they were opening a ticket in the technical department. What is the status of that ticket?

  • Can someone from garmin support comment on this? It's been over a year since anyone did anything about it, and it's probably a simple software change.

  • Hello,

I recently started using Edge 840 for navigation during night time, and came to know that it is almost unreadable. The technology of the screen allows it to be bright and readable when it is lit by the sun at daytime, but in low light it is only just readable at 100% brightness and backlight on always on. The colours still look very withered and dull... That, however, drains the battery a lot. So, that screen technology only works well in bright sunlight. 1050 resolves that problem, but the price is prohibitive, plus it is a bit too big and heavy. The auto brightness being set so low does not help the problem at all. Garmin does not acknowledge the problem, tech support stated that the brightness was "within specs".

Realistically, Garmin should at least introduce several auto brightness settings. If it will get to the max brightness in low light that could improve readibility a lot. Now, I am unsure what to do. Yes, I could return the device to the store but there are no alternitives because otherwise it is perfect.
