Auto brightness too dark?

I just opened my new Edge 840 (NON-SOLAR) and updated to the newest firmware. I am comparing side by side on my desk with my Edge 530. The auto brightness seems quite a bit darker on the 840 compared to the 530, with both in Auto mode.

Curious if anyone else is seeing the same thing. Thanks

  • I haven't noticed any difference to auto-brightness with FW 20.19. Even though it does show as one of the fixes in the changelog.

  • I don't see that in the change log for 20.19:

    • Added NavIC support.
    • Added keyboard suggestions to the location search feature.
    • Fixed crash in extended display mode when executing a workout.
    • Fixed writing free climb category so that it displays in Garmin Connect.
    • Fixed crash for long distance rides.
    • Fixed POI search for conflicts in the map data.
    • Fixed auto pause resetting smart trainer resistance during workouts.
    • Fixed light network battery status icons for components with an external power source.
    • Hid disconnected radar icon when in an indoor activity profile.
    • Fixed light network battery status icons for components with an external power source.
    • Fixed issue with pairing multiple BLE sensors.
    • Fixed crash when connecting to RCT715.
    • Fixed live segments updating during activities.
    • Fixed the resume navigation feature after diverging from a course.
    • Fixed truncation of creation date for courses in the dynamic glance area.
    • Fixed refresh of mobile notifications page.
    • Fixed ClimbPro behavior on bridges and through tunnels.
    • Fixed ClimbPro climb detection on branches with loops.
    • Clarified whether the source of an automatically detected maximum heart rate was from directly measured values or estimated from the user's activity history.
    • Fixed elevation plot overlap with map while zooming.
    • Fixed displaying emojis in startup.txt file.
    • Fixed other minor issues and improved device stability.
  • It's noted here under the 20.18 beta rollout page.

    Change Log 20.08

    • Fixed issues with backlight auto brightness.
    • Fixed elevation plot overlap with map while zooming.
    • Fixed other minor bugs and issues.
  • I haven't checked this thread in a bit, is the issue fixed with latest update? I am older and sight is going and I know I struggle to see the writing on the screen, found Wahoo screen so much easier to read, then when I turn off auto brightness - I CAN SEE again.  Wondering what others have noticed since the latest update

  • In SW 21.16 fixed log:

    • Fixed issue where auto brightness would stop working

I tried it in a dim closet and may be better now?

  • No idea if they fixed anything. I was setting up my 840 indoors, and couldn't see the screen until I manually raised the brightness. It was that dim.

  • Is this before or after installing the latest firmware?

  • After the 21.16 update. I don't recall ever having difficulty with brightness indoors, at least, not to the extent that the display looked like it was off because it was so dim.

  • I take that back. It's still dim AF.

  • I have the same problem with the newest SW 21.16!

The related (?) bug fix "Fixed issues with backlight auto brightness" seems to be existing only in the beta version 20.08 but not in  the 21.16.
