Auto brightness too dark?

I just opened my new Edge 840 (NON-SOLAR) and updated to the newest firmware. I am comparing side by side on my desk with my Edge 530. The auto brightness seems quite a bit darker on the 840 compared to the 530, with both in Auto mode.

Curious if anyone else is seeing the same thing. Thanks

  • My 840 also looks very bad indoors especially. My 530 looked clearer. any solution, will it get better with any updates?

  • It's still horrible when brightness is set to auto on the latest 18.25 firmware.

  • I rode in really bad weather yesterday. It was fairly dark even during daylight hours.
Even under that condition in Auto Mode the display did not get brighter.
BUT when I stopped the ride - at the end - it did.
So to me this looks like really to be a bug.
Auto only enables lowest setting during a ride and does not change according to the real conditions.
But as mentioned it seems not to be a tech issue, as it works in general.

  • Any news here? Screen is still way too dim

  • Auto on my 840 is so dark I absolutely can’t use it. Even when I turn off auto and push the slider to the brightest setting it is too dark, and it drains the battery. I am pretty much telling everyone I know not to buy the the solar version, it’s the worst Edge I’ve ever had. Also, this is my second one, I broke the screen on my first 840 and paid for a crash replacement through Garmin. Customer service wouldn’t let me switch models or I would’ve went non solar. Point is, this is not a one off case, all the 840’s are way too dim.

  • especially with NEW "improvements" - like super thin lines ....

    It's getting even less visible/readable ....

  • i wish i kept my 830. 840 solar is such a disappointment

  • I have the same too-dim problem on my Garmin Edge 540.  I do a lot of rides with a bicycle club, where I use the Garmin for navigation. This dim screen problem is a big safety hazard, because I stare down at the screen to read directions much longer than I should have to.  I would have expected that in the year 2023/2024, Garmin would be putting out clearly readable screens.  What a disappointment!

  • Just made the same unpleasant discovery too.

  • Noticed the same thing, auto-brightness is too dark. Even after the latest 20.19 FW update.
