I have an Instinct and and edge 830. Can I wear the watch while riding using the 830? do I need to disable the HR sensor on the watch, or will the connect app automatically compensate so that my calories are not double recorded?

Garmin will only count the edge data toward the activity. You day data will only come from the watch. If you do not wear your watch, you will find the bike ride does not contribute to intensity minutes. What I and some others do is wear the watch and set it to do an activity while riding, then cancel the activity at the end of the ride. In my case I also pair the watch with the HR sensor I am using as I have found the watch HR to be grossly inaccurate (at least while bike riding). Garmin will not double count your data, but it will drop data if you do not wear your watch.
This is just false. Activities tracked with an 830 contribute to the intensity minutes.
If you don’t believe me, just open your last ride in Connect mobile and check. But I believe that doesn’t help because he asked about calories:
Garmin Connect is smart enough to see if you tracked some calories in timeframe X on your watch in daily mode and also had an activity rubbing on your Edge in the same timeframe. You can wear the watch while riding.
There are numerous threads here which disagree with you. Some are here...

My own experience as well although it is now long enough ago that I do not remember the details of what I observed. I assume calories are a similar situation, but that is an assumption on my part and may not be valid.
Maybe some setting is broken but my watch syncs in the activities from other devices and counts those minutes.
I use an Epix2 and 830 and everything is working well.

Based on what I have read in these forums and my own experience, the edge devices do not register IM, only watches. If you wear your watch while you ride, then yes you will get IM based on the watch. In my case, the watch does not accurately record HR while riding, unless I pair it with a chest strap or arm band sensor. Wrist based HR sensing works better for some people than it does for others.
