Edge 530 speed fluctuation when cadence sensor working

Two month user of Edge 530 with speed sensor 2, cadence, and dual HRM sensors.  Installation was fine, first ride I had numerous sensor dropouts.  After looking at the forum I switched all communication to ANT+ and have not had any sensor dropouts since.  I have noticed that my indicated speed fluctuates dramatically (eg. when riding consistently at about 18-20mph I see values such as 12, 24, 6, 20, 12, 22, 28) to the point I have no idea what is going on.  After reading the forums it seemed like the most frequent place this issue occurred was on concrete roads (old and new, probably similar amounts of rebar) but not so much on asphalt roads.

Today on a group ride I started recording too long before we actually started so my cadence sensor wasn't detected and I couldn't stop to rescan.  This ride was done without the cadence sensor but everything else was the same on the bike, chain, hub, route, other riders.  The location is the outskirts of Houston, Tx.  Imagine my surprise when we got on some of the same concrete roads that I have had to guess my speed and the indicated speed now looked very appropriate as we accelerated from stop lights up to 23mph then held that speed for several miles.  The difference was so dramatic and lasted for the whole ride.

Is there a conflict between the speed 2 hub mounted sensor and the cadence sensor?

    hi,

    good observations Thumbsup

    adding two similar cases

time for contacting Garmin Support and getting a case number ?

    happy & safe sporting

  • hello if sensor was on a rear wheel try to plase on front, i try on my bike with other sensor and other edge 830 same situation speed go up and down

I have the same problem. For the past week I've been riding in a pace line where we are consistently riding at 22mph solid for 3 miles and the Edge 530 reports 22,12,22,10,22,1,5,2,7,22 mph.  Not very confidence instilling in a pace line.  I have the speed/cadence sensor from my Edge 510 and the Edge 530 that is giving me this issue is version 6.0 software.  Additionally the Edge 530 has yet to auto upload to Garmin Connect where the Edge 510 did it with no problems at all minus a bluetooth loss here or there.  Really starting to doubt the quality controls in place.

Moving the sensor to the front hub makes no difference in wildly varying results.

  • Just wondering if the speed sensor is correctly calibrated - especially if the auto-calibration in the initial ride was wonky due to dropouts. Delete it from the list of paired sensors, then add it again.

That theory doesn’t explain rock solid stable data when the cadence sensor isn’t being collected.

  • I had serious dropouts of speed sensor 2 since I changed circumference while riding. Never had issues before.

I tried deleting and adding sensor, but problem still there.

I tried resetting sensor getting out battery and connecting contacts of sensor with an iron wire, re-paired and set manual circumference before riding, problem solved.

    Hope it helps

Update on my Edge 530 issue.  I measured my wheel circumference and manually updated that in the sensor but that actually made things worse.  Next I deleted the sensor and re-added it.  That seems to be helping - I'll have an update tomorrow.  Also it should be noted I'm using the older GSC-10 Speed/Cadence sensor and Cadence data is perfect but speed kept dropping out.

  • Maybe you have issues with the sensor picking up the magnet or maybe the reed switch is starting to fail.  The GSC-10 is known for the magnet activated reed switch failing.

I have a magnetless speed sensor and the speed values I see a rock solid.

@Wongataa - Unfortunately the reed switch appears to be working perfectly fine with my Garmin Edge 510 so I don't think it is that.  I'd be curious if anyone actually has a GSC-10 working with an Edge 530 based on what I have seen I would say no.  It doesn't look like Garmin planned for that based on how awful my experience has been.
