Navigation and roundabout

When navigating the instructions for roundabouts are driving me mad. I am in the uk so every prompt tells me to turn left as we go left round the roundabouts.. It’s only when I get close to the roundabout I can actually see on the map what exit to take.

Please fix this.

  • For anybody else struggling to get the custom maps, here's a very comprehensive howto about it: www.dcrainmaker.com/.../how-to-install-free-maps-on-your-garmin-edge.html

However the garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ website stopped updating their maps in the middle of June, so we are probably better off using a different source. I personally took the plunge and learned how to generate my own map from the raw OpenStreetMap data so now I can have a fresh map whenever I need it, but it was not trivial.

I would still appreciate if Garmin's own maps were not super out of date and badly generated though. The roundabout thing is really lame.

  • i actually thought June 2020 was pretty up to date. Do you know if they have actually stopped updating or just haven't updated since June ? I'm not sure how often they were updating anyway (it's all new to me).

  • If I recall correctly it updated roughly every 2 weeks or 1 month. As you can see on the site they have server issues, not sure if they will fix if eventually or the project will slowly die.

Why recent maps are important for me is because OpenStreetMap is open source. So if you have something very badly mapped in your area, like my Edge lead me through a one way street the wrong way, or missed a great shortcut I know, I can just go to https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit and fix it myself. For it to show up on my edge I either have to wait possibly a year for Garmin to take the fresh data from OSM, or wait for one of these custom map sites to do an update or make my own map and potentially get a new map a day after my edit. Slight smile

  • I make my own maps as well.  I started doing it so I could have my preferred colour scheme and included items.  Once you have set up the process it is straightforward running it on updated map data whenever you want a fresh map.

  • Any idea how often these are updated ?

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ gets updates from Openstreetmap (OSM) roughly every two weeks, At least, it used to be every 2 weeks. It looks like they are having some issues:

"Sorry, due to server problems only country maps are currently available. You may need to refresh the browser cache first (CTRL-F5)."

Garmin creates map versions roughly every 6 months.

Another source for maps is https://extract.bbbike.org/

    ==============================

but there's one called "INTL Standard Basemap, NR". Not sure if i should disable this or if its not relevant to this issue ?

The "basemap" is a world-wide map without much detail.

Keep this enabled (but things will still work with it disabled). It makes things faster (in certain situations) and shows something when you don't have a detailed map for an area.

  • I'm sorry, I didn't buy a Garmin for me to install 3rd party maps. Please fix the bug.

Don't complain when people provide workarounds.

Garmin really doesn't read these forums. It's pretty-much only users.

If you want to tell Garmin to do something. call or email them.

The people here are providing workarounds while you wait for Garmin to fix things.

  • Do you have an example of which roundabouts are causing you problems?

If you can provide a ref/link then the underlying OSM data can be checked and if necessary fixed so that everyone can benefit in time.

    Regards

  • Hi mate. Pretty much every roundabout i have navigated (im based in the UK). There are several threads on the topic and the underlying  OSM data seems fine (i havent tested personally but plenty on here have).

Another thread here with some examples, but there are others on the same topic.

  • That's the super zooming issue which I've personally seen myself.  The units zoom so far in that it becomes impossible to see what you are supposed to do.

Has anyone tested that against an alternative (Non Garmin Cycle Map) map like the ones suggested and therefore identified if its a map issue or a unit issue?

I re-read that post but its not clear if anyone has tested against other maps.  Personally I don't live in an area with a lot of roundabouts so its not easy for me to test.

    Thanks

  • I have experienced the zooming in to far at junctions (not just roundabout junctions, it is just easier to spot at roundabout junctions) with Garmin & 3rd party maps.  My Edge 800 never zoomed in to far with the same maps so it is a unit thing.
