Navigation and roundabout

When navigating the instructions for roundabouts are driving me mad. I am in the uk so every prompt tells me to turn left as we go left round the roundabouts.. It’s only when I get close to the roundabout I can actually see on the map what exit to take.

Please fix this.

  • I see that there’s a new beta firmware but didn’t see any reference to the super zoom at junctions / roundabouts bug. can you please confirm that this bug is still on the to-do list? I saw references to it on an earlier FW log but it didn’t seem to work

    thanks

  • I've been testing a bit more. To recap i have:

    1. Taken the 'generic routable' UK maps from the .nl site and disabled garmin cycle maps

    2. Turned off Auto zoom in navigation settings

    3. Gone onto the map page during a live activity (no routing) and zoomed to a level i thought might be good for turns

I did this test route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2753261291352055854 and then this https://www.strava.com/routes/2753262535974213424

I got some lovely clear TBT instructions at junctions and a perfect level of zoom, with a whole arrow and also the next arrow if appropriate, including this at a roundabout

     :

However on both routes i got a new bug. The TBT didn't start until a few turns in. So on my second route i didn't get instructions for the first or second roundabout or the third turn (pictured below), it just showed instructions for the later left hand turn and an accurate distance. The triangle on the map seemed to be accurate and the route line was also there (it shows i need to turn right and gives the street name), so i could see my way on map view:

And then when i came back to the roundabout it was kinda zoomed in, but not bad enough to be unclear:

  • That first pick looks Ok hand tone5, amazing. Just what you'd expect to see. I am getting something similar at about 50% of the junctions on my routes.

However, the second one is what I then experience for others. It sure is odd why it treats some roundabouts different to others!

  • Yeah ii still think turning off the auto zoom is worth it, because i had really clear images for all non roundabouts, aside from the initial turns bug.

  • I don't think the initial turns bug is related to zoom levels.  I get it as well and have auto zoom on.  I get it at the end of my road if I leave my house heading to the left but not at the other end of the road if I go right from my house!

  • It's a bit of a mystery. I don't see why it would be related BUT it's the first time I've had it and i had it on both routes. TBF if that's the only bug on the navigation side i can live with it easily enough. They were fresh routes. I can't think that i went about creating them in any different way to the 100 or so others i've done on strava (starred, then picked up on GC on my phone and sent to device). I guess it could be a strava bug but i have the feeling that we would know about it already as any strava bug tends to get shared very quickly!

  • I use RideWithGPS for route planning.  Any navigation errors are down to the unit itself (as long as your track is fine).  I have the same issue when I have use Connect for creating a route.  The route files are just a list of points that when joined up trace the route.  There isn't really anything to go wrong there.  It is the Garmin unit itself which generates the turn directions so any issues there are down to the unit.

I have similar quirks when approaching my house at the end of a ride.  If I turn into the end of my road where I don't get a turn prompt when leaving the Garmin says 'Follow route'.  If I turn into the other end of my road my Garmin always states the road name.

I never had these issues with my Garmin 800.

  • All clear, thanks again mate. I've come from using the 1000 unit which didn't super zoom, recognised a roundabout and didn't skip the first 3 or 4 instructions. Not that it was perfect, but from a consumer perspective i would have expected progress rather than new bugs. The edge 1000 was once the premium unit, but is a very old model now.

  • Another test over the weekend and i would say now that the navigation is "generally ok". I'm not getting the super zoom at any junction / roundabout that is an actual turn (auto zoom turned off) - so this is really good.

However, i am getting it when the unit is displaying a straight on arrow in the middle and a turn message in the top banner. I know it's super zoom as i only see the blue triangle very briefly / quickly. I'm not sure why i'm getting this "go straight on whilst turning" message but the course line is clearly showing straight so i can ignore it. I suspect that it is the unit trying to get me to ride on a cycle lane. Could this be possible ? The lane is only 1 or 2 meters to my left, so that might be why i need to turn onto it but the main arrow is straight ?

This is the course: https://www.strava.com/routes/2754041889467281850 and below is the section i had this a lot. At the roundabout over the A406 / North Circular (top right) it didn't show the full roundabout because it was trying to get me to go on a cycle lane over the damn thing.

Can i tell the unit to ignore cycle lanes / tracks ?

  • I have the go straight on with a turn arrow at times as well.  It should be obvious if it is trying to get you on a cycle path as it will say cycle path or something like that.  I have the issue when there is no cycle path.  Usually I see it at a side road and the arrow with the name of the side road with the white arrow pointing straight on.  I have seen it with no side turning as well though.
