Elevation chart and grade display completely wrong on 530 with v 3.50.0.0

My 530 was displaying grade during the ride accurately and had accurate elevation charts in Garmin connect after the ride.  That all changed last week.  The grade seems totally random. For example, today it indicated -7% during a steep climb.

In addition, the elevation chart displayed after a ride is completely wrong.

This is what it showed on my ride today before I applied elevation correction.

Here's the same ride after elevation correction was applied.

As you can see, they are completely different.

I don't know if this issue started when 3.50 was applied.  Anyone else having this problem?

Wouldnt it be smart if the device calibrates if it finds out the GPS has good accuracy and the displayed altitude is waaaaay off? Or do you mean this is user error?

  • I have to disagree with this statement. After extensive testing (including running debug firmware from Garmin) there has been no software/procedure/usage solution for my old unit.

Send it back to Garmin and get a new unit.

My first 830 had same problems and was one of the first shipped out. I tried everything and eventually sent it back to Garmin for a replacement. So far so good with the second one. Don't waste your time trying to fix it, make the call and arrange the replacement.

  • Has anyone had any luck resolving this issue?  I experienced the same issue on my 530 today.  It's been rock solid until the middle of today's ride, when the gradient indications went haywire.  Climbs were registering negative gradients, and the issue never resolved.  The weather was overcast but dry.

    Thanks.

No, it has been not fixed...

I am using edge 530 in version 3.44.

Today I performed ride started and finished in same place

Based on edge 520, total elevation was about 900 meters.

  • Same problem here. It has happened to me Today. Garmin 530 was working perfectly until Today, when I have faced elevation and grade problems, the data was completely wrong! When I was climbing the grade was negative Open mouth And the elevation data, as I said, completely wrong.

Any solution for that? Is it a hardware problem or a software problem? It was raining when I got the error.

    Garmin 530, firmware 5.1

    Thank you!

  • Swirching off auto-suspend and never suspending "solved" it for me.

  • Thanks! I will disable the auto-suspend feature. But actually the error happened during my ride, and my device was not un suspended status at any moment :/

  • It might be something different for you. But I had problems starting later than the actual suspend. So it's worth to give it a try

  • Garmin determined my device was defective and replaced it.  Excellent, fast customer service.  Fingers crossed the new 530 unit fares better.  Will post if it doesn't.
