Ride upload issue while connected to WiFI and Bluetooth

I’ve noticed that with WiFi and Bluetooth enabled if I get home from a ride the Garmin does not auto upload and shows sync failed. If I end my ride while riding home before I’m in range of my home WiFi the ride will upload without an issue. I assume that there is a problem uploading while connected to my home WiFi and connected to my iPhone. Anyone else seen this issue? I assume my work around is to just turn off WiFi..

  • ok, thanks for the clarification Alan

  • My WiFi is OK, but - connection to iPhone doesn't work. bluetooth icon flashing, Edge not connected

  • I have the same issue with my 830.  It will only connect to GC if I manually open the GC app. on my iPhone.  Only then it will connect and upload my ride.

  •  This is how it is supposed to work. Data will only transfer to and from the Garmin Connect app if the app is open (foreground or background).

  • Hmmm.  On my 520 my ride is automatically uploaded to my iPhone without me opening the GC app.  So why is the 830 a step backwards from the 520?  Also, my 830 does not connect to the iPhone unless I open the GC app.  On the 520 it connect to my phone as soon as my phone is in range.  I still think this is a bug since my 520 has no issues on connecting AND uploading rides automatically.

  • Is this something new? I never open the GC app, come home from a ride with my 510 synced to my S9 via BT, stop/save the ride and it is automatically uploaded. Get a notification from Strava within seconds before I even get off the bike. I had some issues a few years ago where uploads were flaky and I thought I needed the GC app open, but since then, nada.

  • I have the 520 plus and the 530. Only a handful of times did my ride automatically sync without opening the GC app and manually syncing. I had to do the same with the 530 after my first ride yesterday. Unrelated in my GC app for my 530 and Vector 3 on the devices page it shows a red exclamation point and message sync failed, but everything is synced.

  • I think I may have misunderstood your statement. So it sounds like you have the app in the open in the background. But it will not sync under this circumstance. However if unlock the phone and bring the app to the foreground, this is the only time you are experiencing the successful sync?

  • That's correct.  And in my case the 830 doesn't even 'see' or find the phone via BT without the GC app. in the foreground.  But this is rather odd....I just did a test with the 830 and my iPhone side by side.  I turned on the 830 without any newly saved rides.  With the iPhone unlocked but with GC in the background, the phone status on the 830 says 'searching' indefinitely until I bring the GC app. to the foreground.  As soon as I bring the GC app. to the foreground the 830 is connected via BT to my iPhone.  Then I turned off the 830 and repeated the test again and this time the 830 connected to my iPhone even with the phone in the 'locked' status.  So I performed another test, this time I closed the GC app. completely and put the phone in the 'locked' status.  Upon a power cycling of the 830 it connected to my phone as soon as the 830 is powered up.  This is without the GC app. running in the background and with the phone in the 'locked' status.  I repeated this test a few more times and the BT connection worked beautifully.  As a last test I reopened GC and let it stay in the background.  Upon a power cycle the 830 did connect to my phone without delay.  So in conclusion I think the issue is with GC, perhaps a glitch that causes issue with the BT connection.  Upon closing and reopening the GC it cleared the glitch.  I will now leave GC running the background indefinitely and see what happens.  Thanks Matthew.

  • Here's another update after my 3hr. long ride today.  I finished the ride, saved the ride, and the 830 again failed to find the phone.  So I unlocked the phone, closed the GC app. that was running in the background without opening it, and waited to see if the 830 will find the phone with the GC app. closed and the phone unlocked.  No dice.  I then proceeded to open the GC app. and the 830 promptly connected to the phone as soon as I opened the GC app.  So the problem still exists.  On my 520 I have no such issues.  I really hope Garmin can find the bug and fix it.  Thank you.
