My Edge 1040 will not start. It keeps looping at start up but goes no further

When powering up, the Garmin logo appears and then it disappears, before looping and trying to boot up over and over again.

I have tried to reset with 30 second power button but no success, except I sometimes see a black line across the screen before disappearing.

I have tried to reset pressing start and lap + power, before releasing power.

I have managed to access the USB mode to connect to Garmin Express, while it allows me to see my files on my PC, it doesn't help me diagnose or solve the problem.

Help please.

  • Factory reset using buttons does not work. Is there no one on this forum from Garmin who can tell me either unit is repairable or to replace with a new one. Will save me hours of fiddling

  • I manage to connect it to the PC using MacDroid Program (Use the Free Pro Version). Deleted all NewFile, RemoteSW, Activities and Courses. I can sync it via PC express but unfortunately I am still stuck at MTP mode. The unit won't accept hard reset.

  • That sucks. Yesterday I thought the problem was over but unfortunately not Stuck out tongue closed eyes. I did not try a facory reset yet but I will wait for Garmin until they release a new update to repair the bugs. This morning I found out that the battery slowly drains.

  • My 1040 crashed on ride. Then stuck in a boot loop. Holding down power button for about 12 seconds force closed the device, I could then restart normally. From that point I cannot shutdown and restart normally without boot looping again, I have to shut down using the long press. It then starts OK. Contacted Garmin Europe support, they have put me in an "open investigation" group, so it seems a known issue. No timeline on fix naturally. So I have joined the BETA program to see if a new software update will fix the issue, in the meantime I will use my old 830 which was and is still bullet proof. Nothing but shoddy software updates with the 1040. Maybe stick your next yearly new watch in the bin and concentrate your engineers on quality of existing kit? Just a thought.

  • Can confirm, enrolling in BETA on the garmin website for the 1040, connecting to garmin express on a PC and updating to 26.11 fixes the boot loop issue for me, so much for adding me to an "open investigation"·

  • I managed to get mine working again following these steps:

    • As described earlier by other users get your Garmin to connect to your computer. I followed these steps shared by other users in this thread: "The moment when you put the Garmin and the usb cable in the pc: You press the Power AND Lap button. The moment the unit is off (screen black) let the power button go BUT keep pushing the LAP button till the screen says: MTB mode. But this can take a while"
    • I initially cleared the courses, newfiles and activities folders but that did not help
    • In a second attempt I opened up Garmin Express, it could connect to my device...but there were no updates
    • When I disconnected the second time the Edge 1040 booted and I got a prompt to update to version 25.25, which I did
    • After booting again all works fine, I copied back all my courses and recorded a ride

    Hope this can help someone.

Some idea I have is that because I always shutdown the Edge after a ride it somehow got in a corrupted state as it was preparing for the update...

  • I get to this point   "The moment when you put the Garmin and the usb cable in the pc: You press the Power AND Lap button. The moment the unit is off (screen black) let the power button go BUT keep pushing the LAP button till the screen says: MTB mode. But this can take a while" bu.

Neither my PC or my Mac (with MacDroid installed) seems to be able to mount the unit as a drive.

    • I can see the unit in Windows Device Manager as an MTP drive but it does not appear in File Explorer as an external drive.
    • On the Mac, MacDroid does not detect anything connected.
  • I did not appear as drive letter on my Windows 11 system but it did show up as device under "This PC" in File Explorer. Double clicking that allowed me to browse the files
