My Edge 1040 will not start. It keeps looping at start up but goes no further

When powering up, the Garmin logo appears and then it disappears, before looping and trying to boot up over and over again.

I have tried to reset with 30 second power button but no success, except I sometimes see a black line across the screen before disappearing.

I have tried to reset pressing start and lap + power, before releasing power.

I have managed to access the USB mode to connect to Garmin Express, while it allows me to see my files on my PC, it doesn't help me diagnose or solve the problem.

Help please.

  • Latest update

After holding down the lap button following a power down of the unit, I can see a Garmin device pop up on the Device Manager. The Edge screen shows Loader 25.25

Once the Edge enters MTP mode, the Garmin Device disappears in the Device Manager, but is replaced by MTP USB device.

However I cannot access this “USB drive” as it does not come up in File Explorer.

  • Hi, I am experiencing the same issue. I am already in contact with the Garmin support since 3rd Jan.

Basically I have the same situation as , the device shows for about ~30s the "Loader 24.56" screen followed by USB MTP Mode for about 30s and then it reboots. During the 30s of MTP Mode I cannot see it in the File Explorer (neither Mac, Windows or Linux). After that it goes into the reboot cycle until "Loading Courses, Files, Workouts and Locations", then reboot again.

Garmin Support suggested me to mount it as a drive and delete "Activities", "Courses", and "NewFiles". Maybe it is helpful for someone, at least for me it wasn't.

I absolutely cannot understand why a multi billion company like Garmin delivers one crap Update after another. I never had no issues after updating – well of course my mistake, why do I updated at all..

  • No. Sadly, I had to replace the device.

  • Hi there, with me the same problem but when I finally succed in connecting woth my pc I noticed that there were lots of files in de NewFilesFolder. So as you adviced I did delete them all as well 1 file in the RemoteSW folder. After that the Garmin unit behaves normally. Fingers crossed Fingers crossed

  • How did you manage to connect to the PC

  • Yes please do tell. That’s the part I cannot get to work.

  • As user  Aweatherall did describe: The moment when you put the Garmin and the usb cable in the pc: You press the Power AND Lap button. The moment the unit is off (screen black) let the power button go BUT keep pushing the LAP button till the screen says: MTB mode. But this can take a while !!! Than with me the Gamrin connects to your pc: Notice that you can see the Garmin is connected with the blue logo to your pc instead of D or F disk.

  • I tried clearing the NewFiles and RemoteSW folders but was still stuck in a boot loop. Following the factory reset instructions (power off, hold lap and start/stop buttons, power on, wait 5 seconds, release all buttons). Then factory resetting a second time. Then after waiting for a long boot I get prompted to set up my device as new. Then once on the main menu I plugged into my PC and using Garmin express I updated the software (not maps) and after disconnecting from PC got a prompt on the device to install SW 26.11 and I hit install. The device then rebooted and installed the update (took about 5 minutes). Hopefully this helps others!
