any insight on maybe a new 1040 or whatever release date?

I could be wrong, but have the feeling there won't be huge supply issues with this unit. I have a buddy that owns a LBS and I am going on a ride with him tonight, so I will have him order me one as soon as they are available. I pay wholesale through him, so obviously I won't be ordering this online. :)

My insurance gives me 20% off if I order directly from Garmin.

Units were available for sale for a short time on the Garmin Canada website.  I think they sold out of their allotment very quickly.  The non-solar was not available when I checked this morning, but I managed to order a solar version.  About a minute after I placed my order, the solar version was sold out.

It appears the solar version is available today and the standard version is a few weeks out.

On Wiggle is only non-solar available, solar will be available in 2-4 weeks.

I'm in the same situation as you.  I bought the 1000 shortly after release in 2014.  So, I was overdue for a replacement.  The features upgrades from 1000 to 1040 are fairly significant.  Looking forward to receiving my new Solar 1040.

Yeah, I am very much benefiting by not upgrading my 1000 until now. Skipping a gen has its perks lol, because the difference between our Garmin units and the new one are substantive. That said, I am so glad my 1000 is in perfect condition. got it as a refurbished replace/exchange like 2 years ago for $90.00 and I didn't want to go for the 1030 knowing a newer model had to be on the horizon, which it obviously was.

But since my 1000 is in mint condition, not even a scratch on the screen, having always been kept in a case, I can probably sell it on eBay. The really pristine used ones are going for upwards of $200.00, which is a nice bonus to defray the cost of the 1040. I think my buddy said the wholesale price of the 1040 is around $400.00 but he wasn't sure.

Is there a softcase included in the box?
