any insight on maybe a new 1040 or whatever release date?

Anybody know anything on when a new Flagship Edge is coming out?

  • Even  normal1030 is spaceship comparing with 520+

Still there are dozens of things that we don't know, procesor, how is behaving on course , rerouting etc

OMG lol the rerouting on the Edge 1000 is so bad, it's actually funny! Yesterday I was doing a ride from Brooklyn through Long Island, and part of the way I loaded up a course just for a tricky segment with a lot of turns and twists I don't always remember exactly. Well, I happened to be off by a block or two at one point, but I knew that as it was intentional because I went to a store on a side street. The thing is that the street I was on, which was the wrong street, was actually a straight path to the next major intersection of the course, which was like 4 blocks away in a straight line; but for reasons passing understanding, the Garmin kept chirping at me to make a U-turn, go around the block, and go completely out of my way to get to a turn coming up that I was already on a straight line to. But the Garmin seemed to think I needed to add like a mile in circuitous twists and turns to go a ridiculous way. I really hope the 1040 is more like Google Maps when it comes to rerouting.

  • Yeah, those are my thoughts as well.  I am speaking more towards those with 1030s and 1030+ units expecting this will be a major update instead an incremental one that it appears to be.  I think people's wishes are a Garmin version of the Karoo 2 UI and mapping (android based), and those are the ones that will be disappointed.  It would be hard for me to justify the 1040 over the 1030+ just for USB-C and a few more hours of runtime.

I'm not on the USB-C or die bandwagon either so a 1030+ w/ micro USB at $150 or more less is probably going to be fine with me unless there is an underlying futureproof feature that hasn't been found.

  • This has been discussed many times before. The Garmin re-routing is not like the rerouting in your car navi. In the car, the routing tries to look forward and reroute to your destination point. In the Garmin, the route follows a list of individual points. When you deviate from a point, it tries to bring you back to the last point, instead of looking forward.

That said, I agree with you that the rerouting algorithm should get more smarter and look forward, so it can direct you to a forward point on the route.

I moved from 1030 to 830 after having several "blue halo" units.  I miss the large size of the 1030 and was thinking of going from 830 to 1040.  However the navigation and re-routing has GOT to be improved or I'm moving to another brand.  I have an unopened Varia RCT715 but weather I keep that and stick with garmin is going to come down to how well the 1040 routes, and handles mountain bike trails  Trailforks on the x30 series was a very nice addition but it was very messy when mixed with OSM and having duplicate text.  830 screen was too small for that.  I would end up paying for Trailforks Pro and downloading their own basemap for Garmin devices, which included a dumbed down streets map in it.  That worked okay if you put the color scheme back to classic.

Wishful thinking would be climb-pro without routing - this would fix half the problem since the x30 series for me caused too many headaches trying to route.

And by 'Improved Routing' I mean I don't want it telling me to "Make a U-turn" any time I use the built in routing for off-road trails.  It was literally not useable in many areas.  If it had something to do with Trailforks and OSM fighting, or whatever (some people have the issue using RWGPS routes) - one would think the device can be smart enough to have a way around the issue.

  • I do not find what you say surprising.  You are dealing with an 8 year old computer.  I am not sure if I have anything in my house that is electronic and 8 years old. Do you think you have gotten your money out of it yet?

  • I have not been the fondest of garmin bike routing.  However I tried wahoo on a couple of very long trips and I was begging the gods to switch it to a garmin of any kind.  Routing will never be as good as android or google maps as those are live on the fly maps and not static maps like we have on edge computers.  The algo should be better and I believe it will be getting better.  But we will see.

For Me I will be getting a 1040 when available.  I went from a 1030 to a 130 plus as garmin told me it would work with no issues with my dual sided rally pedals. (it did not).  All I have left for head units is my forerunner 945. It works fine but I need a much larger screen at my age.  I am also looking forward to getting a decent screen again for outdoor workouts.

Unfortunately I am A USBC wannabe.  I hate micro usb as they always end up having issues with the cable or connector.

I dont think I will go solar.  30 hours should be enough.

  • I have also 130 plus, as o don't carry large screen device when I commute, besides not having NP , everything works, but this is small sized device, it's not intended to replace bigger screen devices

    It does not have maps

  • It does not have maps but the bread crumbs were ok. My issue after spending 1500 on pedals was that it did not have cycling dynamics. I informed garmin that I was downgrading from  a edge 1130 to the 130 plus and using the rally pedals and they said it would work with all the data from. The rally pedals.  They did not.  I ended up selling the 130 plus at a very nice loss and started using my 945 that has all the metrics.

  • From the unboxing / menu walk-thru videos it seems the software version as shown is 10.16 suggesting to me the 1040 SW is fairly much a port / slight update from the current x30s versions (530/830 9.40, 1030 13.40, 1030+ 6.40) rather than a new start from scratch and the menu structure / options look very much the same. Anxiously awaiting a DC Rainmaker "In Depth" Review, perhaps tomorrow?

  • I am hoping it has the Wahoo phone type setup.  That is the only thing I liked about the bolts.
