any insight on maybe a new 1040 or whatever release date?

Anybody know anything on when a new Flagship Edge is coming out?

  • Thanks, but no.

I am not arguing an iPhone is better.

I am defending myself after publicly being attacked as a liar and for not being a serious cyclist.

I am also correcting statements that a phone cannot be used the way I am using it.

I am also educating the community about how an LCD screen works, which is relevant to a Garmin, as others have made statements that may mislead the community whom are here to learn.

  • You explain to us that you do 7 hours of rides with an iPhone 12 Pro on the handlebars:

    1) I find it hard to believe this is possible with the GPS on, the tracking app on, and the screen on all the time. Unless you have to power it with a dynamo or a powerbank.
    2) The smartphone is your survival kit in the event of a serious fall. Having it on the handlebars is absolutely not serious. So inevitably when I tell you that you retort me as if by chance that sometimes you have 2 smartphones on you. I believe you of course, but your demonstration is becoming more and more ridiculous.
    3) I insist but the smartphone is not suitable for all uses of the bike, unlike the Garmin Edge or equivalent brand. Are you telling me the iPhone is waterproof? Why does Apple not guarantee smartphones that have taken on water? My Garmin takes snow, mud, rain, storms, it is precisely made for that.

Once again I'm not saying that you can't ride a bike with your smartphone, I sometimes do it on vacation when I go for a walk with the children because I don't necessarily have support for my Edge and I don't need to connect my different sensors (Speed, Cadence, Power, Cardiac, VARIA) and that suits me.

Yes, a Garmin Edge like the 1030 has flaws, but you can't say it's comparable to a Casio from the 90s or that its screen is worse than a 3DS. We can't say that because it makes NO sense. The Garmin Edge 1030 has a huge battery life and taking your bike and going for a short ride without worrying about whether there is still battery life left is a real pleasure. With your smartphone you have a chance in two that it is not charged enough.

The Garmin screen is very clear, a little too bright, but no point in doing more. I have a friend who has the Karoo 2 .. it's a disaster! It crashes all the time. So we can blame Garmin for not developing its system enough, but I believe that its system is its strength! Wanting to revolutionize it is to risk upsetting the millions of users loyal to the brand.

The faults on Garmin are known and we always come back to the same ones:
    - The Turn By Turn: It is not always at the top but it depends on the origin of the trace. It is the same constraint on all GPS.
    - Redirection: Not always terrible, but Garmin regulars deactivate this function! Just look at the map to find its route.
    - The screen is too bright: It can be improved
    - The USB-C port: It's about time!
    - The weather: It should adapt to the GPS position of the counter and not only to the starting position of the activity. Even if personally I look up and see.
    - Data screens: Add the possibility of zooming like on Wahoo. Natively add the possibility to add more than 2 data fields on the map, even if a Widget allows to do it...

  • From Apple's website, the specs are "Rated IP68 (maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes) under IEC standard 60529," which far exceeds some rain on the screen while cycling.

I do not know why Apple does not warrant water damage - I do not have access to their internal decisions. Possibly because users would use their phones in moving water, e.g. at the beach, which has a greater pressure than the specified 6m static test.

    I didn't say anything about a Casio.

  • I know Apple is good about waterproof, but what about your android low cost phone under the rain ?

  • They were rained on several times and never failed for that reason. My 3 year old Hauwei no longer holds a useful charge. My absurdly cheap Android that I forget the name of is still going strong.

  • Parece ser que se va despejando el enigma...
