2x respiration rate since Feb 18 2025

Hi, does anyone notice after the firmware update the respiration rate become 2x or almost 2x of real value? My Fenix 8, Tactix 7 are like that. Then last night I pair my old Venu 3, it gives my a proper value. This morning, I got a new Venu 3 firmware update, after the update, it becomes as bad as my Fenix 8.

I use other devices such as the Clinic grade Masimo to check and compare my respiration rate, yes, it confirms Fenix 8 is indeed not showing proper value.

  • Update April 9, 2025:

Our engineers have indicated they are aware of a change in respiration rate with the most recent software update. They are indicating this is by design. A March 2025 software update improved the responsiveness and accuracy of the respiration rate feature.  This may result in more variability (higher and lower respiration rates) compared to the previous software version.

Using the Respiration Rate Feature on My Garmin Watch

  • This is unacceptable and ridiculous.  I can maybe understand more variability, but it should not affect the average respiration rate. You can clearly se the almost 2x jump in my average respiration rate after the update.

I am a software engineer and if I came back with a response as ridiculous as this, I would be reprimanded.  Please tell your engineers to come up with a real fix.  We’re not idiots.

  • Laurie, Thanks and appreciate! I know your position is difficult.

By design?” What type of engineer is that? Improve responsiveness and accuracy,  leads to a completely off tracks of human vital signs reality?

I have the March 2025 update. It still is not making any sense with reality.

For example how the world is the low resting heart rate and high HRV correlated with high respiration/ breathing rate? Please take a look at the following YouTube I just make. Please get your engineering department to verify what is reality before releasing update. I pay $1000’s usd for my Garmin watches. And it can’t do what a $250 usd Masimo MightySat Fingertip Pulse Oximeter do.

  • Please read my new response. We must not beat at Laurie, the engineering department needs to verify if things making any sense at all. I don’t mind if Garmin offer me to refund my Tactix 7, epic 2 pro, Venu 3….etc

  • this is partly simply wrong what engineers tell you.

Truth: the variation of the values increased a lot
Lie:  it affects the median, values are now at least 50% higher then before

Here detail data from the Web-API:

especially the values where body is in rest are now much higher and the medians are wrong now:

interesting thing is: it seems to affect the data collection in rest and at night more then during the day.

Honestly the facts are against the "works as by design" argument.

  • Honestly the facts are against the "works as by design" argument.

Perhaps they mean it was wrong before the update, and that the update fixed the former incorrectly low values. The only way to confirm or deny that claim would be comparing the data from the watch, to data from a medically approved respirometer or capnograph. Comparing it just with another watch is not necessarily proving anything, since it can be as wrong as this one.

  • We are not only comparing with other watches (Apple and Oura show same metrics as Garmin before the update and both of them are much more accurate for sleep analysis at least for me). We are complaining that the daily rate is lower than the night rate. Now I am no expert but I believe that when I sleep my breathing is much lower than when working (this was shown in Garmin before the update. Now the sleeping rate is higher than the awake rate).

  • TBF for me night and day have always been pretty much the same and at the time of the update both went up from around 14 to 17-18.and now since the beginning of April I'm back down to around 15. As a comparison WHOOP normally has me at 16-17.
