2x respiration rate since Feb 18 2025

Hi, does anyone notice after the firmware update the respiration rate become 2x or almost 2x of real value? My Fenix 8, Tactix 7 are like that. Then last night I pair my old Venu 3, it gives my a proper value. This morning, I got a new Venu 3 firmware update, after the update, it becomes as bad as my Fenix 8.

I use other devices such as the Clinic grade Masimo to check and compare my respiration rate, yes, it confirms Fenix 8 is indeed not showing proper value.

  • Yes, confirm again, the respiration rate has problem even after I reset the watches. It is off. Very disappointed. Hope Garmin fixed it soon. In the mean time, I switch to Apple Watch.

  • It is certain now Fenix 8 respiration rate is off big time. Compare my last night sleep respiration rate, Garmin vs Apple Watch. To see it to belive, please watch this YouTube . Please please fix this, it has no problem before the firmware update. Now my sleep, yoga, meditation data are all screw up and make no sense.

  • Hey, I've noticed also  a big increase after the latest update. Based on the change log they "touched" this functionality so for sure there is room for bugs. Thanks!

Frankly, I do not see any major difference between the data from both sources, on that video. The major difference is that the data from your AW is averaged to one hour intervals, while the data in Garmin Connect is shown in 2 minutes samples. It means any peaks are smoothed out in the chart from AW.

For example the respiratory rate is 11.5 brpm @ 5:43 on AW. And although it is almost 20 brpm @ 6:03 in GC, just a few minutes before that it was at 12 brpm, which is very close to the AW value at that time. So yes, there may be a slight difference, but nowhere near 2x as you claim in the title. If you averaged the data from GC to 1 hour intervals, there would not be much difference. At least not in the case you posted in the video - the data looks rather consistent with each other.

  • 11.5 in Aw and shows Almost 20 in GW means 1.73 X, even it is not 2x. I can easily pull out my other meditation data to show there are 2x cases. but what is the point? Why should I accept a 1.73x off data from a 1000USD watch?

As in this photo, Garmin constantly  shows respiration rate of 20 where the reality is not true thus, average respiration rate is much higher than the proper respiration rate in Garmin. At sleep when respiration rate is about 20 as Garmin shows, the person’s breathing is in a state of walking or sick. Should I go see an MD because GW is off?

  • When I do my meditation my breathing rate drop under 10 rep/min to 6 rep/min, Garmin shows around 20 rep/min. I have checked it with Apple Watch, masimo..etc to prove it is a false alarm my meditation practice still hold,  I don’t have to go see my doctor.

  • That’s not the the case, Garmin  shows respiration rate of 20 where the reality is not rue.

Your average respiration rate on the graph is somewhere around 16 (not 20), and that's nothing uncommon. Normal respiratory rate in a healthy adult is about 12 to 20 breaths per minute.

When I do my meditation my breathing rate drop under 10 rep/min to 6 rep/min, Garmin shows around 20 rep/min.

At consciously controlled breathing, like breath holds, or breathworks, Garmin watches indeed easily fail.

  • sorry, my breathing rate is my health. It shows my health condition.  Not some General uncommon stereo type. When sudden change in breathing rate there could be serious health problem.

I practice meditation, I can go to deep rest state,  not those consciously controlling breathing stuffs. Garmin watch shows proper data for at least months until Feb 18 with a sudden jump. It is my health. That’s why I pay 1000USD to track my health. Or else, I don’t have to buy Garmin.

  • Unfortunately I cannot help you, but if your watch really measures too high, you should report it to the Support. If they do not get any feedback from users, it is not likely to change.

  • I have called customer support but not take me serious asking me to do all kind of stuffs. That’s why I get the clinic grade Masimo and Apple Watch to verify it is not my health before I go see my MD.In this case, it is Garmin ‘s issue.

to see is to belive, Watch this YouTube,  Anyone with a right mind will want to find out if it is their health problem when there is a sudden jump.

I have been Garmin customer since forunner 645, Tactix 6, instinct , Venu, Fenix 6, Fenix 7, Tactix 7, epi 2 pro , until Fenix 8,

May be it is time to switch to Apple Watch. When company grow, old customer is no longer value.
