Fenix 8 51mm SOLAR Battery Drain

I’ve had to raise a support ticket in the end. My Fenix 8 51mm Solar is performing significantly worse than my old Fenix 7 47mm Solar.

100% charge on Friday

6 Hours of GPS activity over the weekend in sunny weather and 150-200k LUX each day. Finished Sunday night at 65%. Woke up this morning to 50% (15% drain over night!).

It’s typically draining 8-10% a day when there is no activity as well.

Steps I’ve tried (not that any are acceptable, as they differ from my 7).

1. Latest BETA software

2. WiFi Off

3. PulseOX off.

4. Backlight is at lowest setting.

5. Gesture Backlight off.

  • iphone or android?

  • about the same here and using iphone

  •  same exact here same watch disappointed but am expecting they will figure this out.  watch is 2eeks old

  • Fenix 8 47mm Solar version.

I tested changing watch faces. It looks like when you try to show real-time statistic or some weather related data. That impacts battery consumption speed a lot. I am now using simply watch face like Tablo2 or Simple Modern and showing Date time and battery percentage only. That consumed around 6% - 7% per day (in 24 hours). Btw, I also enable the morning report.

  • Third party watch faces tend to be more energy intensive than native ones irrespective of what data is selected. The first thing to do if believing there is excessive energy drain is to remove all third party installs then monitor for a few days using only default 'stuff'.

  • That makes sense.

  • Same here with brand new 51 Solar 11.68 :( Tbh it's kinda pathetic that Garmin is unable to resolve such basic issue with their flagship (and F7 btw).

Watch is using 0.7%/h with settings as above. I'll wait one week and if nothing changes in FW I'll get a refund.

It's the first time, in over 10 years using Garmin, that  I'm so disappointed with new watch.

  • Side question based on your post: F7 has this issue too? If yes then I am going to have even lower confidence. BTW @HP.DOC I have also a 51mm AMOLED F8 and it has this battery drain issue but after soft resetting it stops then it restarts again later. They need to fix this.

  • Yup, 17.28 had battery consumption aprox 0.08-0.1/h, 18.14 huge drain up to 1.0%/h and now I'm reading that people are starting to have issues with 18.16. Something is terribly wrong with dev team, persisting errors in new releases are bad sign.

PS: My F8 is 51 Solar and now it drains battery more than AOD AMOLED Fearful

  • My Amoled Tactix lasts for real 24-26 days.  The new F8 is under a week.
