Fenix 8 51mm SOLAR Battery Drain

I’ve had to raise a support ticket in the end. My Fenix 8 51mm Solar is performing significantly worse than my old Fenix 7 47mm Solar.

100% charge on Friday

6 Hours of GPS activity over the weekend in sunny weather and 150-200k LUX each day. Finished Sunday night at 65%. Woke up this morning to 50% (15% drain over night!).

It’s typically draining 8-10% a day when there is no activity as well.

Steps I’ve tried (not that any are acceptable, as they differ from my 7).

1. Latest BETA software

2. WiFi Off

3. PulseOX off.

4. Backlight is at lowest setting.

5. Gesture Backlight off.

  • I also have 51mm MIP with latest beta (11.87) and no issue here.. Having watch since 6 days, ~70% battery after unboxing and today 37%. 5 trainings already but no GPS usage (except some map testing), only indoor smart bike and weight lifts.

Backlight on 50% (8s, but only when clicking)

  • Unfortunately this is an issue on AMOLED as well. I have the 51mm Solar and the battery drain is equivalent to worse.

  • There is clearly many bugs about this. I had the same exact problem, but the last beta solved the issue, I now have a huge improvement in the battery life, either outside of activities (ie, less than 2% per night), or inside, where I have a duration with always on and a lot of map display, it's almost as good as with my 7x in this area.

hope that your bugs will be fixed soon, mine was likely the one that was about a consumption after saving an activity, but it's now completely gone.

  • Fenix 8 Solar 47mm , same here

  • This affects the Enduro 3 as well (including 11.87 beta). I have a baseline 60-100% higher battery drain than what is advertised with very conservative settings and also a bunch of sun charge. Through Garmin-Laurie I got the logging enabled on my watch for the last 2 weeks and I hope the devs are going to do something with the data gathered, but I can't see how this is not something that is present on every fenix 8 family device.

Is there anybody who gets lower or similar than the advertised drain in smartwatch mode? That's about 100%/36day=2.7%/day in case of the Enduro 3. The best I got so far was 3.2% with 100k+ lux hrs of average solar daily, where it should be close to 1.5%/day. Typically I get 4.5-6%/day. If anybody else wants to try, here are two battery widgets/glances to keep track of the usage: Battery Widget, SHN Battery

Here are the advertised percent/day rates the watches should hit in smartwatch mode, so no activity tracking (with solar/AOD in the brackets):

    Size 43 mm 47mm 51mm Enduro 3
Display AMOLED Solar AMOLED Solar AMOLED Solar
    Battery (days) 10 21 16 30 29 36
    AOD/Solar (days) 4 28 7 48 13 90
    Drain /day 10.00% 4.76% 6.25% 3.33% 3.45% 2.78%
    AOD/Solar /day 25.00% 3.57% 14.29% 2.08% 7.69% 1.11%
  • Glad they are investigating it. Maybe they’ll do some logging on my watch as well and resolve it.

I wouldn’t expect my Fenix 7 47mm to perform better than the Fenix 8 51mm Solar. I think with regular use (8-12 hours of training a week) I’d be lucky to get 10 days out of it.

  • My 47mm MIP solar is using 2-3 percent per night  Strangely enough last night I thought I'd dry turning on Pulse ox and surprisingly the total battery drain was 3% (or just under) during sleep.

  • With PulseOx and baclight low or off, the likely culprit is bluetooth. Reboot your phone and your watch to reset the bluetooth connection.

  • Yes, I also have a Fenix 8 51mm Solar and the consumption is high, and in smartwatch mode with no sports activity it's 10-12% in 1 day and even with the latest beta 11.87
