Do you experience random reboots and/or freezes when doing an activity? If yes, please comment.

Hi All!

I've been reading countless comments about F7 watches (also other devices from the F7 series such as Epix, Enduro and Tactix) producing unexpected reboots and freezes. Unfortunately, this has been the case for many users since November 2024 and now it is end of January 2025. As far as I saw this happens while using different activities such as walking, hiking, running, track run, trail run, triathlon and the list goes on.

I witnessed how frustrating this could be as my wife was going through the same. I believe, we did all we could, even more. We did countless soft and hard resets, installed the same latest 19.41 production FW from the watch's developer menu, rolled back to FW 18.16 which appeared temporarily good then failed as well. After having spent so much time and energy, today my wife's loved Fenix 7s Sapphire Solar was taken to the Garmin official store in our location. After we shared all our experiences and explained in detail the actions we did the representative made no questions and exchanged the watch to a PRO model. The representative mentioned that he was not aware of any Pro models failing. Since the community have no official information I thought to create this post and I am asking you all facing reboots and/or freezes to provide the following information below in a comment. Perhaps this will reveal something useful that can be used by the Garmin folks.

1. Model of your device.

2. Software version (production or beta)

3. Short description of the circumstances (for ex.during track running, following a preloaded course while using hiking, etc.)

Thank you for your input.

  • It is mind boggling how systemic the reboot during activity is with the Fenix 7 series! I'm not aware of this issue with the 8 series and came from a 6x Pro and never saw it. Is there not some way to replicate the software from one of the other versions to correct the problem in the 7 series? I'm on my 2nd 7x SS and will be calling to try a third one. Really can't understand how this has persisted for so long now.

  • On my hiking trip today, I had my first crash with 16.22. After 1.5h in, the watch became unresponsive showing the map screen and then rebooted. It took some fiddling to resume the recording (I had to load the course again), but eventually it worked.

As a last resort, I will try 15.77 now, since 20.19 isn't stable either. 16.22 was way (!) better than 19.41 and has been the most stable version yet, but obviously still flawed.

In the 5 years I used it, I never had any crashes on my Fenix 6 pro and I don't know, what's going on with Fenix 7...

  • I've also just experienced this again today during a run. Also with navigation, bluetooth and ANT+.
On 20.16 on a Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar.

  • Yet another one for me today 12m into a navigated run - running 20.16 - touchscreen switched off, I even switched off the phone connection today (never have notifications on watch switched on) did 2Ragemiles and counting myself "lucky" to have only had one reboot - not liking the sound of 20.19 as it sounds like that reboots in off state - really getting frustrated now - especially as uploading thRageRAM.txt files doesn't seem to work either - know one thing for sure - this will be my last ever Garmin watch Rage

  • marathon season starts soon, if this happens to me during the race it will be a definite goodbye to garmin (unfortunately)

  • I downgraded to 15.77 today and basically it has been a smooth process. However, most of my trusted Apps, widgets & data fields aren't compatible with this firmware version and I couldn't make them work - even with the Garmin Express workaround.

Therefore, I am back on 16.22 again and hope that at some point Garmin will be able to sort it out in a future firmware update.

  • I spent much time installing different firmware versions and checking nearly all posts about the maps crashing problem in this forum.

From what I saw, according to this forum thread (forums.garmin.com/.../repeat-crashing-rebooting-after-16-22-update), the problem seems to have been introduced between 15.77 and 16.22.

All versions after 15.77 including 20.19 still have this problem (to a varying extent, with 19.41 being the worst from my experience).

Maybe this information is worth to be brought to the developer's attention?

  • Good morning,

Unfortunately it restarted again this morning after a few days with nu issues.

  • There is a buglist that you can post to on the betas but I don't know where it is. I have run into it in the past. I did not run into this particular bug as I don't use maps but you could always just stay on 15.77 which is what I've used going back to around November 2024.

  • Thanks. I did go back to 15.77, but couldn't make my essential third-party Apps & Data fields work, since those in the meantime have been updated to a newer CIQ Version and are no longer compatible with 15.77. And I don't know where to find and how to install older Versions of those.

Therefore, I am stuck with 16.22 right now. The following things I will try however going forward:

    - manually rebooting the watch after each charging cycle (I hope that resets any cumulating data that perhaps isn't cleared correctly in the firmware and leads to a memory leak, like a broken garbage collector or something. However, this is just a wild guess of mine, but kind of in line with user reports, where the crashes appear only after using the watch for some time and probably after multiple successful recordings).

    - disable SatIQ (just out of curiosity to find out, if this has anything to do with the crashing problem)

Other than that, I have no ideas.
